The All-Star Game's official Twitter account passed along several interesting tidbits about this year's participants:
Fans will decide one final AL and NL roster spot. Voting has opened for the five finalists on each side, per the MLB official Twitter account:
With the starters already locked in place, there was still plenty of reason to tune in Monday to see which reserves and pitchers rounded out the remainder of the two rosters.
Since MLB home run leader Giancarlo Stanton is out due to injury, the announcement indicating who'd fill his void in the starting lineup was highly anticipated. 2013 MVP Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates deservedly got the nod to take Stanton's spot.
The Pirates' official Twitter account provided a neat graphic to celebrate McCutchen's consistent presence at the prestigious annual affair:
Thanks to a resurgent 2015 campaign, it came as little surprise that 10-time All-Star Albert Pujols was named as the injury-replacement starter for Detroit Tigers superstar Miguel Cabrera at first base for the AL.
Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times shared some context for Pujols' return among baseball's truly elite players:
Pujols' former club, the St. Louis Cardinals, is the best team in baseball and has the most All-Stars. It seems both parties are doing just fine apart these days.
The Kansas City Royals have the AL's best record and were rewarded with four All-Star starters thanks to a strong fan voting turnout. K.C. also boasts a formidable bullpen and saw both Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera pick up All-Star nods on Monday.
Joel Sherman of MLB Network highlighted how tremendous Davis has been to merit his spot on the All-Star roster:
A couple of infield prodigies stand out among the NL reserves in Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant and San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik.
CSN Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic logged what Panik had to say about his maiden All-Star selection and that of his teammate, reigning World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner:
Pitching is of utmost importance, especially in a playoff type of atmosphere. Although the All-Star Game is an exhibition of sorts, the Fall Classic implications make the pitching rotations all the more notable to heed.
While the National League boasts some stud starters such as Max Scherzer, who threw a no-hitter for the Washington Nationals in June, the AL has a stellar bullpen that could come through in a big way late. Minnesota Twins closer Glen Perkins has converted all 27 of his save opportunities this season and could be called upon to slam the door in Cincinnati.
With so much at stake, the general unpredictability due to the day-to-day nature of baseball and the talent involved, this 2015 All-Star showdown has all the makings of a thriller for the ages.
And of course, there is suspense to be had with one final spot for each All-Star squad left to a fan vote. This unique wrinkle gives baseball enthusiasts the opportunity to have their say one more time in choosing from a list of 10 finalists who fell just short of the initial reserves cut, and those two lucky winners will be announced Friday.
