Windhorst: Kevin Durant Will 'Probably Get Traded' by Suns in 2025 NBA Free Agency
There is reportedly a belief across the NBA that the Phoenix Suns will trade Kevin Durant during the offseason.
During an appearance Wednesday on Get Up (beginning at the 3:50 mark of the video), ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst said Durant will "probably" get traded over the summer, adding, "[Durant] knows it, the Suns know it, the rest of the league know it."
Despite Durant's strong play this season, the Suns are 11th in the Western Conference with a 26-27 record, which suggests a roster overhaul could be on the horizon.
Leading up to last week's NBA trade deadline, rumors and speculation linked Durant to potential deals, but nothing came to fruition.
Perhaps the most realistic scenario would have seen the Suns trade KD back to a Golden State Warriors team he previously spent three years with, but per ESPN's Shams Charania and Ohm Youngmisuk, Durant had "no desire" to return to Golden State.
As a result, the two teams ceased engaging on a potential Durant trade, and the Suns kept their core of Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal together beyond the deadline.
The Suns brought Durant, Booker and Beal together in hopes of winning a championship, but they haven't meshed together as well as the front office anticipated.
In their first year together last season, the Suns were swept out of the first round of the playoffs, and they wouldn't even make it into the postseason play-in tournament if the 2024-25 season ended today.
Even at the age of 36, Durant continues to be a highly productive player and one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the sport.
On Tuesday night, Durant became only the eighth player in NBA history to reach 30,000 career points, as he recorded 34 points in a 119-112 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.
After averaging 27.1 points per game and finishing ninth in NBA MVP voting last season, the 15-time All-Star is once again putting up 27.1 points per contest this season on 52.8 percent shooting to go along with 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.4 three-pointers made and 1.4 blocks.
A two-time NBA champion, two-time NBA Finals MVP and one-time NBA MVP, Durant is signed through the 2025-26 season, and he is set to account for $54.7 million against the salary cap next season, per Spotrac.
Unless Durant signs an extension as part of a trade, any team that acquires him will be taking a chance since he could be a one-year rental.
Even so, there are likely several teams that would love to gamble on a generational talent and future Hall of Famer like Durant, particularly if they believe they are one major piece away from a championship.
