Orlando Summer League 2015: Top 6 Takeaways from Sunday Night

Stephen BabbJul 5, 2015

NBA clubs continued to size up their prospective talent in the Orlando Summer League on Sunday, the second day of contests featuring some of the league's best young talent. The games are also important opportunities for many job-hunters—generally young players who haven't solidified pro jobs just yet.

Everyone has something to prove at this level, and that translates into some compelling basketball.

The Detroit Pistons bested the Los Angeles Clippers by a 77-69 margin as rookie Stanley Johnson's coming-out party continued after his strong Saturday debut. The Memphis Grizzlies edged the Charlotte Hornets by a final score of 79-75, and the Miami Heat narrowly averted defeat with a 71-70 last-second win against the Brooklyn Nets.

Knicks Haven't Lost in a Month 🤷‍♂️

Where better to begin than with a heroic buzzer-beater?

Lob Takes Down Brooklyn Nets at Buzzer

Miami Heat guard Tyler Johnson had been a steady contributor all game long, but his biggest points came with 0.4 seconds left on the clock. He finished with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists after catching the buzzer-beating lob.

Willie Reed's 17 points and Justise Winslow's 14 points led the Heat, and the team controlled much of the game until a late push from Ryan Boatright (23 points) and the Nets. Reed looked the part of a potential rotation piece, and Winslow showed continued promise after the organization selected him with the No. 10 overall pick in last month's draft.

Boatright went undrafted that night, but he made a case for himself in Sunday's second half, nailing five three-pointers and converting on four free-throw attempts as Brooklyn hung around throughout the contest. The Nets took a one-point lead at the line before Johnson's acrobatic game-winning lay-in.

Stanley Johnson Getting Better by the Day

The Pistons immediately upgraded their wing with last month's selection of Johnson with the No. 8 overall pick. And by the looks of summer-league play, he may be more ready than previously believed. The 19-year-old followed up a 13-point debut (Saturday) with 24 points, nine rebounds and three steals against the Clippers in Sunday's win.

He scored from all over the floor, hitting floaters, nailing three-pointers and striking in transition.

One way or another, Johnson seems determined to make contributions right away for the Pistons.

"I gotta go out there and play, be a spark plug," he told the Detroit Free Press' Vince Ellis after Saturday's contest. "I know when I came in the game we went on a little run so I'm showing versatility in that some people can't come off the bench. So show that I can do that, I think is big for me."

Johnson could conceivably compete for the starting small forward job alongside Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on the wing. He started for Detroit's summer-league squad Sunday after playing with the second unit Saturday. After a 10-of-14 shooting performance against Los Angeles, Johnson's efficiency may well keep him in that starting lineup.

Kaminsky Continues Strong Play

After a 19-point debut Saturday, No. 9 overall pick Frank Kaminsky posted 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks in another strong performance Sunday.

The big man described his psyche after Saturday's contest.

"I'm coming off a great season in college, and I feel like I'm starting over with no respect," he said, per ESPN.com's Michael Wallace. "So I've got to earn my respect."

As much as one can earn respect during summer-league play, Kaminsky seems to be making some headway. He's demonstrated his shooting ability and skill on the interior, the kind of versatility that made him a prized lottery pick for a club looking to turn the corner.

And at least one of that club's coaches is taking notice. Per Wallace, Charlotte assistant coach Patrick Ewing spoke about the rookie's progression:

"

I just want him to be a good player, a great player. I like the fact that from the first day of practice to right now is like night and day. At first, he was tentative. He was like a deer in the headlights. But as the week went on, you could start to see he started to get his confidence and is getting his swag back. He was out there (Saturday) even trash-talking. I like that.

"

Wolters a Credible Backup PG?

Originally drafted with the 38th overall pick by the Washington Wizards in 2013, Nate Wolters has spent most of his career with the Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans, even starting 31 games for the former. He currently finds himself auditioning as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers summer-league roster.

He posted 12 points, five rebounds and four assists in the team's loss to the Orlando Magic on Saturday and continued his strong play Sunday against the Pistons. This time, he had 18 points and made seven of his 12 field-goal attempts.

The strong outings could lead to consistent backup minutes with a team like the Clippers. With 6'4" size and some pro experience, he's not a bad candidate for the job.

The summer action is still young, but Wolters is already reminding observers why he's won solid playing time in this league. It may not be long before he's earning it again.

Harrison Twins Face Off

In an early Kentucky reunion between Andrew and Aaron Harrison, the former came up victorious while the latter had the better individual game. Andrew tallied nine points, six rebounds and two assists for the winning Grizzlies, while Aaron posted 16 points, eight assists and four rebounds for the now 0-2 Hornets.

The meeting between the two twins was somewhat historic:

Aaron had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals in his Saturday debut, while Andrew had eight points and three assists in his opening contest. Both players are vying for roster consideration despite sliding in the draft (or in Aaron's case, going undrafted altogether).

So far, Aaron seems to be playing with a chip on his shoulder.

"I was a little nervous at the beginning, but once you get warmed up, it's just basketball," he told reporters after Saturday's game, per the Lexington Herald-Leader's Dennis Varney. "It's good to get minutes like that."

Both brothers are getting minutes for now, and they're making something of them.

Troy Daniels Gets Going for Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC - APRIL 13: Troy Daniels #30 of the Charlotte Hornets drives against the Houston Rockets during the game at the Time Warner Cable Arena on April 13, 2015 in Charlotte, North Carolina. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees tha

It wasn't enough for the Hornets, but Daniels' 21 points and six rebounds were a positive sign for the 23-year-old's ongoing early development. Daniels was integral to keeping Charlotte in a game in which it trailed by as many as 19 points.

For him, this is a key opportunity to hone his craft.

"I've been working a lot this summer on ball-handling and coming off ball screens," Daniels told reporters after practice last week, per the Charlotte Observer's Rick Bonnell. "I think if I hit the ground running in summer league, I'll be ready for training camp and then it's so on and so on."

Daniels made six of nine three-point attempts Sunday, demonstrating the range that should continue earning him a job in this league.

"That's the reason I'm in the NBA, because I shoot the ball and space the floor," Daniels added last week. "That's something Charlotte needs. I showcased it a little bit at the end of the season and hopefully I'll get to do that more."

At this rate, head coach Steve Clifford may have to consider a more prominent role for Daniels, particularly if the organization fails to re-sign guard Maurice Williams.
