The Truth Is On The Field: Boise State And MWC Welcome To The BCS
I said it numerous times last year, if you're the only team to go undefeated, you're the National Champion. The rule certainly should hold true if there are nearly 120 other teams in your league. Sadly, this is not the truth for the non BCS conferences in college football.
It's time for a change.
After week one, there can be no doubts about the strength of the little guys. Boise State took care of business easily, almost as if Oregon was a WAC team. Utah has already gone undefeated twice and appeared in BCS games, winning both handily.
And now we have BYU, beating Oklahoma at a "neutral site," as if Provo and Norman are equidistant from Dallas.
But let's not forget about TCU, another squad that continually takes on and beats the best in college football.
As much as BCS fans, and Big 6 conferences (Big East, Big 10, Big 12, SEC, ACC, Pac-10) would like to admit, these boys can play, and it's time to invite them to the party.
Conference strength is something that many people harp on, demanding that the MWC add Boise State and others to strengthen it. I would love Boise in the league, but I want the promise of a BCS game.
There is no reason to have four solid teams if the best they can hope for is to go undefeated for a shot at a BCS game.
Recruiting was a buzz word before Utah defeated Alabama. Nobody believed that players who were not five-star recruits could compete. Give the MWC a BCS bowl, and imagine the players they could get.
Recruiting is driven by success, especially the success of the league. Blue Chips want to play against the big boys, and when I say play, I don't mean sitting the bench for three years and transfer out.
Boise, TCU, BYU, and Utah all offer that ability for players to play—and play against good competition weekly. They also have the coaches that won't jump ship for the next big contract. It makes a difference to families and players, I assure you.
So how about it, BCS? I know the contracts are not up yet, but what else could you want from a conference? They beat the big boys, (Oklahoma, Alabama, Oregon, UCLA, Michigan, Louisville) and their little boys beat the big boys (Wyoming over Tennessee, Colorado St over Colorado). So give them a chance every year.
In the BCS, these teams are 3-0, 3-1 if you count Hawaii. This is proof enough that they can play against the big boys.
P.S. Maybe it's time that all these big boys start playing these guys at their place. I mean, how long has Boise been winning and Oregon was the FIRST top 25 team to come to Boise...Unacceptable.
Let's get moving NCAA and BCS, I'm getting tired of seeing Ohio State losing in BCS games. Let's see the new blood of college football.
