5. Vijay "Roid" Teague

Greg MangumSep 8, 2009

David had a pretty solid draft and was rewarded with a boat ride after it.  It was a pretty big boat with 2 huge twin motors hanging off the back.  David was overwhelmed by the smell the motor put off,  and was found grimacing after the boat ride.  It was a rough ride which David had to pay for, and after the ride the captain was demanding it should be worth more.  When David was finally back on land, he started to get his breath back and bashed the captain.

Quarterbacks:

Teague has 2 very solid quarterbacks in Jay Cutler and Matt Ryan.  Cutler could be in for a big year in Chicago and is the type of guy that can drastically change an offensive mindset and game plan for a team that is so used to winning with  a power running game and a dominating defense.  Look for the Bears to take to the air a bunch this year and find themselves in several high scoring games.  The Bears have a ton of speed on the outside in Devin Hester and Jay Cutler's former teammate Earl Bennett who caught 9 TD’s as a freshman at Vandy in Cutler’s senior year.  Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark are both great pass catching tight ends and Matt Fore is an excellent receiver out of the backfield.  Cutler’s arm allows the Bears to have a mid to deep passing game over the middle of the field, run deeper timing routes and fit the ball into tighter spots that neither Orton or Grossman had the arm strength to do.  Matt Ryan is a  very smart, accurate quarterback but won’t be able to sneak up on teams this year as he will definitely be a bigger part in the defensive game plan.  The Falcons are a very balanced team and Ryan very rarely gets a chance to air it as much as mote elite quarterbacks.  Ryan only had 2 300 yd. games last year, 11 games in which he was held under 20 completions and 11 games where he threw the ball less than 30 times.  It won’t be easy putting up great numbers under those conditions.  Also, there isn’t a backup on the roster, and Ryan had as many games without a TD as he did throwing multiple TD’s (5).

Running backs:

The running backs are very questionable and highly TD oriented.  If DeAngelo Williams continues to get the bulk of the carries, as well as most red zone carries, he will surely live up to a first round pick.  He also should improve upon his 22 receptions as the Panthers need to get him the ball in the open field more via screens and swing passes.  Marion Barber could be in for a disappointing year, and the only thing that saves him is that he should get the goal-line carries in Big D.  That being said, he’s still a reliable option in the passing game out of the backfield, but Felix Jones will see significant playing time and Tashard Choice should steal a few carries as well.  LenDale White is feast or famine depending on whether he scores a TD or not.  The power-back, who rushed for 15 TD’s last year, should have a lot of chances to score in the Titans run-heavy offense.  He only went 6 games without a TD last year, but in those 6 games he averaged a measly 3.2 fantasy points, and only caught 5 passes for the entire season.  Rashard Mendenhall could end up being a great pick and has tremendous upside on the bench.

Wide receivers:

Larry Fitzgerald, the best red-zone receiver in the game,  highlights a really good receiving core.  Marques Colston is fully healthy and should bounce back with a huge outburst after an injury plagued season last year.  At #30 overall, he could end up being the biggest steal in the draft.  Colston went for 22 catches, 306 yds., and 4 TD’s over the last 3 games of the season last year.  Teammate Lance Moore should have another good year in such an explosive Saints offense.  The only negative is that the Saints have so many weapons, there will always be one or 2 of the high profile fantasy guys to have sub-par stats.  Santonio Holmes and Steve Breaston provide great depth and will more than likely see a good amount of playing time on Teague’s roster.  Breaston is valuable as a #3, but it’s in games where Boldin or Fitz is unable to play where Breaston’s value really skyrockets.

The Rest:

Teague has two quality tight ends in Owen Daniels and Visanthe Shiancoe.  Owen Daniels is a main component in the Texans high powered offense and should definitely improve upon his 2 TD’s last year.  Shiancoe had a sneaky 7 TD’s last season and should be highly incorporated in the passing game with Favre under center.  Baltimore is arguably the best defense in the league at creating havoc for their opponents with their relentless blitzing packages and playmakers all across the field.  The Ravens are tremendous at forcing big play turnovers and turning them into touchdowns.

Ratings:

Quarterbacks:      B-            86

Running backs:    C+           84

Wide receivers:     A             95

Tight ends:            B             89

Defense:                A+           N/A

Overall:                  B             88

Season Outlook:

Teague needs consistency from his 2 quarterbacks and can’t afford many bad games from them.  As long as the RB’s can get in the end zone, it will offset the lack of receptions and attempts that they will get from sharing time.  The receivers should be exceptional and be the leading source of points in most weeks.  Both tight ends provide solid options that could have some big games.  Baltimore is a defense that can really boost your point total on any given week and had more total points last year than players such as Terrell Owens, Reggie Wayne and Randy Moss
