Twitter Reacts as Sol Campbell Continues His Campaign to Become London Mayor

Football history is littered with international superstars who went on to become politicians. Romario stood in Brazilian federal parliament after hanging up his boots, George Weah aimed to become president of Liberia and Roman Pavlyuchenko stood for Vladimir Putin's United Russia party at a local level even while playing at Tottenham

The latest former pro to attempt to gain power through democratic means is Sol Campbell, who feels he is the right man to become the next mayor of London. The former Tottenham and Arsenal centre-back was interviewed on London's LBC radio station Tuesday, where he scored what has been described as an "own goal" by admitting he did not own an Oyster card...

Campbell spoke about the need to invest in the Underground but also struggled to figure out a simple route on the network when prompted. It didn't take long for him to trend in the UK... 

Big Sol's unfamiliarity with public transport seemed to be a big talking point among the Twitter proletariat...

Many were also keen to retweet some key quotes from the LBC interview...

Campbell's struggles with the English language gave his Twitter foes plenty of ammunition...

Inevitably, many football fans were keen to revisit Campbell's highly controversial 2001 transfer across London...

One user also joked about Arsenal fans' famous tendency to "ruin" Internet polls...

In the interest of fairness, it is worth noting that Campbell did receive a few tweets of support, including one from former Tory MP Edwina Currie...

It seems that Mr. Campbell will struggle to win the mayoral elections in London, but he is clearly doing everything he can on the campaign trail...
