WWE Programming's Best Match for Week of June 13

Brad JonesJun 20, 2015

Following on from another excellent pay-per-view in the form of Money in the Bank 2015, WWE continued its strong run of form with a great week of in-ring competition.

A strong roster, despite injury problems, is managing to keep a steady flow of must-see matches coming. The company certainly has a great deal of talent at its disposal at the minute, and it seems like the majority of the performers are being allowed to reach their full potential.

Despite the match being good as opposed to great, the finish to the Diva's Championship match at Money in the Bank was a fitting tribute to Dusty Rhodes, even if some less informed fans seemed to have been left confused by the outcome.

The pay-per-view also produced a very good ladder match for its eponymous briefcase. Whatever you think of Sheamus coming out on top, the bout itself delivered all the thrills and spills you could want from this type of contest.

The much-anticipated rematch between Kevin Owens and John Cena also lived up to expectations, although it didn't build on their first encounter all that much. It's clear their issue hasn't yet been resolved, so it made complete sense as a middle chapter in their ongoing feud.

Owens had something of a stellar week, with teasing matches against Cesaro on SmackDown and Samoa Joe on NXT. Both of these bouts will be revisited in the future, and they should both produce some really amazing stuff.

However, the most satisfying Owens match of the week came against Dolph Ziggler on Raw. The Showoff is a great foil for Owens' style, and the pair took full advantage of that on Monday night.

Match of the Week for Week of June 13: Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose at Money in the Bank 2015

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Ambrose and Rollins put on a great match at Money in the Bank, as they've demonstrated over the course of their intermittent feud that they can do just that at the drop of a hat.

Chemistry is hugely important in a major rivalry such as this, and it's clear that both men mesh well when they're in the ring. That connection can turn a decent match into a great one, and it's especially important when stipulations come into play.

Bringing a ladder into a wrestling ring adds all kinds of complications as with any other non-standard match type. The basics of wrestling remain the same, but the crowd expects a very different outcome—and as a result, a different narrative.

The prevalence of stipulation matches in recent years has provided plenty of evidence of the ways that foreign objects and changes to the rules can throw off wrestlers who aren't on top of their respective games. The way Rollins and Ambrose handle stipulations demonstrates that both are top-tier athletes.

Whether it was their excellent Lumberjack match last year or the ladder match at Money in the Bank, stipulations only serve to improve the outcome when these two step into the ring. They only offer up more opportunities rather than being extra complications, as they seem to be in other bouts.

It's a testament to both men's flexibility and no doubt part of the reason why they've both been able to hop from feud to feud and produce great matches along the way. These two men deserve to be in the main event, and this match should put that beyond any doubt.

Ambrose versus Rollins toed a line between the storytelling of Razor Ramon against Shawn Michaels and the all-out spectacle of TLC II. There were some memorable high spots, sure—but they were engrained into a story that played off their considerable history.

This is hopefully a feud fans will be able to enjoy for years to come, and this could well go on to be remembered as one of its most iconic encounters. Historically, ladder matches have been the proving ground for wrestlers on their way to superstardom, and it's not difficult to see that happening in this case.
