Parzych's 2009 NFL MVP Awards: Preseason Week Four

Dan ParzychSep 7, 2009

We are less than a week away from the start of the 2009 NFL regular season, which means the 2009 NFL preseason has officially come to an end (it's about time). With the conclusion of Week Four of the preseason, who was the Most Valuable Player at each key position?

Quarterback: Rex Grossman, Houston Texans

Remember the days where nobody could take Houston Texans QB Rex Grossman seriously? Well, those days may still be around.

However, Grossman showed us in Week Four that he is still capable of putting on a solid performance every once in a while as he was competing for one of the final roster spots on the Texans' roster. Looks like Grossman's performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers helped secure him a spot, which is why he is receiving the award for Most Valuable Quarterback this week.

Grossman played the final three quarters against the Buccaneers, finishing 9-of-16 for 197 yards and two touchdowns. The most impressive statistic from Grossman's performance was he threw zero interceptions.

He may not have a starting job like he used to when he was with the Chicago Bears, but Grossman should be happy enough just to receive the No. 3 spot behind QBs Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky.

Running Back: Danny Woodhead, New York Jets

Wait, who? That's right,

New York Jets RB Danny Woodhead may have had the best performance of any running back in Week Four, even if it was just a preseason game. In the team's final preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, including a 55-yard touchdown run.

Woodhead's performance was good enough to land him a spot on the 53-man roster by the deadline last Saturday night. Unfortunately, he was released by the Jets the following day as they made room on their roster for players off of waivers.

Will Woodhead wind up playing for another team this season? Only time will tell.

On the bright side, at least he can say he won the award for Most Valuable Running Back during Week Four of the 2009 preseason.

Wide Receiver: Jacoby Jones, Houston Texans

Houston Texans WR Jacoby Jones, like many other players, was battling for one of the final spots on the team's 53-man roster. After his performance in Week Four against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it looks like Jones will be playing each Sunday once again for the Texans.

Jones was able to haul in three receptions for 148 yards and one touchdown against the Bucs, including an 87-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Jones was one of six wide receivers the Texans kept on their 53-man roster and appears to have the No. 5 spot. He may not see as much playing time as a receiver, but Jones is also a valuable weapon for the Texans returning punts, which may have helped head coach Gary Kubiak's decision to keep him on the team.

His performance from Week Four may be rare at wide receiver during the regular season, but Jones showed the rest of the league that he can be a threat.

Tight End: Tony Curtis, Philadelphia Eagles

Who would have thought the Dallas Cowboys may be helped out the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009?

Not even two weeks after signing with the team, Philadelphia Eagles TE Tony Curtis made a name for himself in last Thursday's game against the New York Jets. The former Cowboy and Kansas City Chief was signed by the Eagles a few weeks ago to compete for the backup position of TE Brent Celek.

After Thursday's performance, the Eagles may try to use Curtis more often in the offense, especially in the red zone. The 6'5" 251 lbs. Curtis hauled in four receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown against the Jets.

The Eagles were concerned after rookie TE Cornelius Ingram suffered a season-ending ACL injury during training camp. If Curtis can perform as well as he did against the Jets throughout the regular season, QB Donovan McNabb may have found another weapon to throw to on offense.

Defense: Denver Broncos

In their first three preseason games, the Denver Broncos defense gave up 71 points, which is almost an average of 24 points per game. The defense seemed to be one of many issues that needed to be addressed for a team that finished 8-8 last season.

Prior to the Broncos final preseason game the 2009 preseason, their defense failed to record a single turnover. In last week's shutout victory against the Arizona Cardinals, a game in which they won 19-0, the Broncos defense was able to record three interceptions and a fumble.

The Cardinals offense may have struggled throughout the 2009 preseason, but the Broncos' shutout may be the boost of confidence needed as the team prepares for their Week One matchup against QB Carson Palmer and the Cincinnati Bengals.
