Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Arturo Vidal, Edinson Cavani

Gianni VerschuerenJun 18, 2015

Real Madrid have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, which according to Metro's Tom Olver should open the door for Arsenal to complete a transfer of the Chile international.

Marca claim the latest incident, where he crashed his car and was booked for driving under the influence, as noted by Speed, means that Los Blancos will no longer consider a bid:

"

Real Madrid have been keeping tabs on Arturo Vidal for some time now. Last season, he came very close to donning the 'Los Blancos' shirt, but the club got cold feet in the last minute. The player's brilliance on the pitch is well known, but unfortunately for him, so are his antics off it. Vidal lives life not befitting an elite sportsman, with too many late nights living la vida loca. Nobody doubts his quality, but the Juve midfielder is just too hot to handle for Real.

The incident has massive repercussions for everyone involved, and while the sporting world will mainly talk about Chile's chances of winning the 2015 Copa America and whether or not the player should be suspended, it could also affect how his transfer saga plays out during the summer.

Before Vidal crashed his Ferrari, his potential transfer to Arsenal was mainly driven by English and Chilean media, while all reports from Italy, Juventus and the player himself suggested a move was out of the question. Whether that's still the case is anyone's guess.

The Bianconeri have the depth to survive without Vidal, with the likes of Claudio Marchisio, Paul Pogba, Sami Khedira and Stefano Sturaro expected to play big roles next season. Vidal is incredibly talented, as evidenced by this stat from OptaJavier, but Juventus have enough good midfielders to let him walk:

They'd rather not sell, however, and if anything, his car crash lowers his value on the open market. Teams won't be willing to spend big on a player coming off such a public incident, and if Juventus can't fetch a significant fee for his services, they won't sell.

Would manager Arsene Wenger consider moving for Vidal in the wake of this controversy?

The Frenchman has always preferred to stay away from troubled players, and while Vidal appeared very sincere in his apology, via SuperSport, it's not hard to imagine that Wenger's interest disappeared as soon as he found out what happened in Chile:

As things stand, it still seems unlikely Vidal will leave Turin, and with his value arguably lower than it has been in the past four years, Juventus won't be looking to sell. It makes no sense for the Italians to deal at this time, unless they'd rather just get rid of the player altogether.

One stupid mistake won't erase all of the contributions he's made to the club throughout the years, however, so don't expect Juventus to deal Vidal anytime soon.

Edinson Cavani Commits to Paris Saint-Germain

LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 11: Edinson Cavani of PSG celebrates following his team's victory in extra time during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, second leg match between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge on March 11, 2015 in London,

Edinson Cavani has no intention of leaving Paris Saint-Germain for one of his many Premier League suitors, telling Le10Sport (h/t Daily Express' James Cambridge) that he loves the city of Paris and hopes he can stay with the French champions:

"

Any comments, all these things that are said, we should remember the subject and when I mentioned it.  I did not mention the city of Paris, club, organisation.

What I said is that I used to play in the centre and it cost me to go to one side, which is normal. When you are used to performing a task, it is not obvious to switch to another.

Everything related to my private life, family, I'm happy. I feel very happy in Paris. I hope I can make it. I will give everything for them. This year is completed. It motivates me more. I am very happy there and we hope everything will continue as well.

"

The Uruguay international has been forced to change his role since moving to Paris from Napoli, playing wide to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the squad. He still managed to score 31 goals for PSG last season, according to WhoScored.com, a testament to his quality and ability in front of goal.

He also has a sense of humour, as shared by Goal:

In all seriousness, Cavani remains a prolific striker who has both the athleticism and aerial prowess to be a success in the Premier League. And while PSG invested heavily in him when they brought him to Ligue 1, his sale could make room for the arrival of another star-caliber player for whom the club has more of a need.

Should the right offer come along, Les Parisiens will at the very least consider it. The question is whether Premier League clubs would be willing to splash the cash on a player who has at times looked out of place in the past few years, notably during the Champions League tie against Chelsea.

It's quite possible Cavani looked lost because he hasn't had a significant stretch of matches back in his old position―a problem that could plague him during the Copa America as well―or he simply may no longer be the player fans fell in love with while he was at Napoli.

That said, 31 goals is nothing to scoff at. According to WhoScored, that's seven more goals than Arsenal's top scorer during the 2014-15 season, Alexis Sanchez.

A move for Cavani would make sense, and while the player himself appears happy in Paris, there's little doubt he would jump at the opportunity to be the main man in north London. Whether the Gunners will be willing to meet PSG's valuation is a whole other matter, however.
