Chelsea and Arnesen Should Be Embarrassed

Sam RobertsSep 7, 2009

Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen might well look red-faced after the Blues were this week handed a transfer ban.
FIFA have found the English club guilty of inducing winger Gael Kakuta, 18, to breach his contract with French club Lens and banned the Blues from registering any new players for the next two Premier league transfer windows.
But Arnesen and Chelsea have been further humiliated by an excellent article on the club’s youth policy in the News of the World.
The article has placed a huge question mark over the job Arnesen has done at The Bridge since his arrival from Spurs and left a dark cloud over his reputation.
The story alleges Chelsea have spent in excess of £60million on signing youngsters Arnesen deemed full of potential, but have yet to see one develop into a first teamer.
The figures are staggering when you consider the fees paid to agents to recruit the youngsters have not even been taken into consideration.
Chelsea forked out £5million in compensation to bring Arnesen across London, as they believed he was the best man around to spot and nurture talent.
But after failing to produce a single first-team regular for Chelsea, Roman Abramovich is surely set to review procedures at Cobham.
It will be the stories of Franco Di Santo, signed from Chilean team Audax for £3million and then loaned to Blackburn and Slobodan Rajkovic, bought from OFK Belgrade two years ago for £3.8million and now on loan with Steve McClaren's FC Twente that should infuriate Abramovich.
The transfer ban should also not come as a shock to the footballing world when you consider Arnesen was caught by the BBC in 2006 offering £150,000 to Middlesbrough’s Nathan Porritt, 15.
The Blues were also accused of tapping up Michael Woods and Tom Taiwo.
The pair were signed in a blaze of publicity, arriving from Leeds for combined fees of £4million.
It’s no surprise FIFA have come down like a ton of bricks on the West Londoners, who have said they will be launching "the strongest appeal possible".
