Sinisa Mihajlovic Hired as AC Milan Manager: Latest Contract Details, Reaction

Rory MarsdenJun 16, 2015

Former Sampdoria boss Sinisa Mihajlovic has been announced as the new manager of AC Milan just hours after confirmation of Filippo Inzaghi's sacking on Tuesday.

The Serbian manager has signed a two-year deal at the San Siro, according to Sky Sports' Anton Toloui.

Mihajlovic himself recently suggested he was set to take over for Inzaghi imminently, per L'Equipe (h/t ESPN FC), and indeed his confirmation as the new Rossoneri boss came hot on the the heels of the Italian's departure.

The Guardian provided a translation of the club's statement on the arrival of the 46-year-old:

"

After spells in charge of Bologna, Catania, Fiorentina, the Serbian national team and his last experience at Sampdoria, Sinisa Mihajlovic is officially the new coach of the Rossoneri.

The 46 year-old from Vukovar arrives with 156 matches as a coach in Serie A and 11 in the Italian Cup behind him, and not to mention nine World Cup qualifiers in charge of Serbia.

As a player, Mihajlovic was a team-mate to ex-Milan great Dejan Savicevic during their days together at Red Star Belgrade before arriving in Italy and Serie A where he would enjoy the most success in terms of titles and trophies at capital club Lazio.

"

The club welcomed their new manager with a video:

Milan will be hopeful that Mihajlovic can return the club to its former glory following a 2014-15 season in which they finished 10th in Serie A, 35 points back from champions Juventus.

For the second year running, Milan have failed to qualify for European competition. This was one of the factors that led to club legend Inzaghi losing his job after just a year in charge.

As noted by football writer Greg Lea, the hiring of the inexperienced Inzaghi by the Milan hierarchy now looks somewhat naive in hindsight:

In Mihajlovic, they now have a far more experienced head at the helm and a man who steered Sampdoria to a respectable seventh-place finish in Serie A last season.

However, there will be no quick fix for the Rossoneri, as they have been on a downward spiral since their last Serie A triumph in 2011.

Mihajlovic needs time to implement his own style and bring in the players he wants. Whether he will be given that time remains to be seen.
