WWE Needs to Continue Making Kevin Owens Dangerous and Unpredictable

Ryan DilbertJun 17, 2015

WWE's recent habit of letting Kevin Owens be its uncaged animal is the right move.

Having him continue the trend of monster heels pouncing on the unsuspecting, of leaving men in need of medical attention, is the smartest way to showcase the NXT champion. That route allows him to best leave a strong impression on the audience, his daunting aura leaving us chilled.

Depending on how one looks at Owens, it's hard to tell why we would root against him.

He's a hardworking indy favorite who has spent 15 years in this business on a smaller stages. He stuck it out, pursued his dream with an unrelenting passion until he finally got the call from WWE. He's a father. He has a reputation for going out of his way to interact with fans.

And as the French-Canadian told Chris Jericho on the Talk is Jericho podcast, he learned to speak English by listening to Jim Ross call matches.

It's hard to boo a guy like that. That's why to make the most out of this run as a villain, making him do vile things to people is so important.

On Monday's Raw, we got a taste of that. Machine Gun Kelly appeared on the show, performed one of his songs and soon saw Owens approach him. MGK offered to shake the bruiser's hand, but instead took a powerbomb off the entrance ramp.

He had no prior motivation for the attack. He simply wanted to cause pain.

When JoJo Offerman asked him why he went after MGK, Owens simply said, "Because I felt like it."

This is the kind of heel move we need to see more of from him going forward. It's an act like this that clearly distinguishes heels from babyfaces, whether they are loving fathers and friendly Canadians or not.

Owens has been similarly dastardly during his stay at NXT. On the night he debuted, he clotheslined his best friend to the floor and powerbombed him on the ring apron.

He won his subsequent title match against Sami Zayn by foregoing mercy and delivering a flurry of powerbombs until the referee stopped the match. Owens was made to look vicious in these moments, a force one should fear.

Zayn left NXT for a month after the attack. The fan favorite is currently out of action after another attack from Owens.

Alex Riley underwent surgery after his battle with the powerhouse.

John Cena suffering the aftereffects of Kevin Owens assaulting him.

And most recently, John Cena followed a win over Owens with referees aiding him to the back. Owens assaulted his opponent after the bell, leaving him unable to stand and forcing him to miss Raw the next night.

WWE needs to now further Owens' reputation as a man who hurts his opponents, who cares nothing for their well being and is unsettling in how cold he is.

Have him believe a low-level wrestler is disrespecting him and lay him out in response. Have him take a swing at Byron Saxton. Let him be the next great wrestling beast.

The writing team should draw inspiration from Mark Henry, who gleefully hurt men like Big Show and The Great Khali and others as he constructed his "Hall of Pain."

Vader was a similar kind of predator in his WCW days. When he stepped into the ring with someone, worry set in. Picturing him injuring his opponent took no imagination whatsoever.

In 1993, Vader powerbombed Cactus Jack onto the cement floor after his manager, Harley Race, removed the mats around the ring.

Vader benefited from the violent act by coming off as even more dangerous than before. It helped make him a monster. That's the kind of heel Owens is capable of being.

Focusing on his penchant for surprise violence is the path to allowing him to become Vader or Henry-like. It's the best way to harness Owens' talents right now and give the rest of the roster a formidable heel to contend with.

Give him victims, ample space and let him go to work.
