Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose: WWE Title Feud Shouldn't Continue at Battleground
Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose put on a memorable match at Sunday’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view, an instant classic that will surely be mentioned as a Match of the Year contender.
If we learned anything from the WWE Heavyweight Championship match, it’s that the Rollins-Ambrose feud will be a featured storyline for a long time. Thanks to it, fans will get some amazing matches with great angles.
As of today, however, this part of their story has ended. It’s a great time to put the Rollins-Ambrose feud on ice...until the next time, whenever that may be.

A rematch wouldn’t advance either wrestler at this point
There is surely a segment of WWE fans, maybe even WWE Creative, who will clamor to see these two go at it again at Battleground next month. When you have two outstanding performers who can put on matches such as these two have, it’s only fitting to let them continue to battle.
Booking a rematch would be self-serving. It would be an admission that WWE has nothing else for these two, especially Ambrose.
Rollins, who has been booked poorly throughout his entire championship run, was back to being the aggressor. The intensity he showed in systematically breaking down Ambrose was simple yet stunning.
Rollins will need to keep that same intensity once Brock Lesnar comes looking for the championship, which may happen soon, as the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestlezone) reported Lesnar will appear on Monday Night Raw. A Lesnar-Rollins match for the title could be in the cards for the next pay-per-view, giving Rollins his next challenger without having to look over his shoulder, wondering if Ambrose lurks somewhere nearby.
WWE fans should be more concerned with Ambrose’s bookings in the immediate aftermath. Sunday night proved he is a main event talent, but there’s no one presently available in that upper echelon to feud with him.
He lost to Rollins fair and square. Bray Wyatt, who has been criminally underused since facing Undertaker at WrestleMania 31, is in line to job for Roman Reigns. John Cena and Kevin Owens appear to be feuding through the summer. Ryback, another babyface, holds the Intercontinental Championship and is staring at Big Show and The Miz.
Ambrose is all alone. He needs something that won’t diminish his main event standing.
Maybe he’ll be given time to mend, taking on guys like King Barrett in short matches to build up some wins. Maybe he’ll hang with Reigns and provide advice for how to deal with Wyatt.
Now that Sheamus is a top contender after claiming the Money in the Bank briefcase, Ambrose could factor in. While it’s assumed Sheamus and Randy Orton will be dueling, Ambrose could be added to help get Sheamus over as a top heel.
Rollins and Ambrose will meet again when WWE needs them to
This isn’t the first time the Rollins-Ambrose feud has hit a stopping point. When it did the first time after Hell in a Cell in 2014, fans complained about its abruptness.
This time around, WWE gave everyone a beginning, middle and end. But this isn’t the story’s conclusion; rather, it’s the end of a single chapter that these two will continue writing.
The Rollins-Ambrose war could be a methodical, highly gratifying angle for both men’s careers. The Rock and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin had this same dynamic, creating stirring matches over the course of several years.
It could be another year before these two have an episode together, always eyeing each other in the meantime and ending up on the periphery. They will battle others for championships, for a contendership, for other angles that are unknown.
But then, when the WWE needs a pair to draw eyes to pay-per-views, it could bring out Rollins and Ambrose.
Maybe Ambrose will be a heel, and Rollins will have earned the crowd’s admiration. Maybe Rollins will continue to be the heel needing heat, and Ambrose will be just the guy to knock him down a peg.
It’s a natural rivalry that someday will have its own episode on the WWE Network. But for now, it’s time for this rivalry to take a back seat. It’s time for these two to forge new paths.
Until we need them once again to deliver in the moment—like they always have.
