Three Giant Killers for the FCS
There were 37 games pitting FBS schools vs FCS schools if you are old school that's 1A vs 1AA.
Three giant killers found the breaks to beat the Goliaths.
Villanova started it out with a 27-24 victory over Temple of the MAC.
Nick Yako kicked the game winning field goal as time expired for the Wildcats.
Chris Whitney completed 24 of 35 passes for 278 yards and threw two touchdown passes for the Wildcats. Villanova had dropped five straight against Division I teams and its last victory over a Division I team was in 2003, a 23-20 win over Temple in double overtime.
A pair of ACC teams bit the dust next with Richmond beating Duke 24-16 and William & Mary getting by Virginia.
The Spiders, reigning champions of the Football Championship Subdivision, defeated the Blue Devils in a season opener for the second time in four years. Tyler Kirchoff rushed for a touchdown and blocked a punt for another score to pace the Spiders.
Thaddeus Lewis had a decent game for the Blue Devils he was 34 of 55 for 350 yards and two touchdowns. The Blue Devils played in front of a crowd of 33,311, Duke’s largest at home since 2001.
B.W. Webb had three interceptions and William & Mary Tribe forced seven turnovers and Webb returned his last interception for a 50-yard touchdown with 2:39 left in the fourth quarter.
The Tribe, which got four field goals (in six attempts) from Brian Pate, finished with a 309-269 total offense advantage after a start that made it seem like a rout was in order.
There were numerous other games that were nail biters for the FBS. Iowa had to block two of Northern Iowa field goal attempts at the end of the game to survive.
Even with the three wins with an eight percent win rate don't look for the FBS to be worried about the teams from the FCS.
With numerous games next week between the two divisions lets just wait and see what the FCS comes up with next.
