Rollins made a rather bold statement after the match:
WrestlingInc.com noted how long this highly entertaining match lasted:
Black Sports Online's Robert Littal was pleased with the ending:
WWE legend Mick Foley also gave the match a positive review:
WWE Universe provided some of the highlights of the match:
Rollins' journey to the top of WWE started one year ago at Money in the Bank 2014 when he won the Money in the Bank briefcase. He ultimately cashed it in successfully on Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, and he was able to continue his run with the title by sneaking past Ambrose.
The so-called architect of The Shield faced plenty of adversity during the build toward Money in the Bank. It started at Elimination Chamber when he very nearly dropped the championship to Ambrose.
WWE's Lunatic Fringe appeared to have won the match and the title after pinning Rollins, but the decision was ultimately reversed. Ambrose was awarded the win via disqualification since Rollins pulled the referee in front of him, which meant The Authority's handpicked face of the company retained the biggest prize in wrestling.
Despite that, Ambrose took the title and kept it in his possession until Money in the Bank. The unstable Superstar made the rounds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans with the title in tow, and he did everything possible to get in Rollins' head.
His mind games also seemed to work on The Authority as Stephanie McMahon dismissed his credibility as a potential WWE World Heavyweight champion, according to WWE Universe on Twitter:
Reigns then helped Ambrose get a rematch for the title at Money in the Bank by poking and prodding Rollins. While everything seemed to be going against Rollins, he remained defiant.
Rollins has done battle often with his former Shield compatriots over the past year, and he continued to remind them he is the reason why one of the most dominant factions in WWE history is no longer in existence, per WWE Universe:
It was easy for Rollins to talk tough with the backing of The Authority, but things appeared to break down on the go-home edition of Raw as J&J Security and Kane opposed him. Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury even scored an upset victory over the champ due to interference from Ambrose, which gave the challenger all of the momentum entering Money in the Bank.
Even so, Rollins was able to prevail once again, which has become a trend with him since he won the title at WrestleMania. He has lost plenty of matches along the way on Raw and SmackDown, but Rollins simply finds a way to remain at the top.
That may not last for much longer, though, as Lesnar seems poised to return, and he will undoubtedly want to get his hands on Rollins and the world title after what happened on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
It can be argued that Rollins hasn't been built up to look like a strong champion thus far, but he turned in a great performance Sunday against Ambrose, and he'll have to be presented as a legitimate top Superstar in order for the fans to buy into that as a one-on-one feud.
