WWE Money in the Bank 2015: Match Card, Potential Spoilers, Predictions and More

Ryan DilbertJun 13, 2015

WWE Money in the Bank 2015 will offer plenty of thrills, violence and spectacle—just don't expect a slew of new champions.

Seth Rollins has more challenges to face ahead as world champ. Ryback is just getting started with his run with the Intercontinental Championship. The New Day isn't done with the tag titles, either.

The arcs of the current storylines hint at those outcomes. Some potential spoilers, courtesy of a backstage report and a house show lineup, offer more clairvoyance.

Money in the Bank promises to be a fun show despite its lack of turnover. A pair of ladder matches assure it will have plenty of breathtaking moments. And by the end of the night, one man will clutch a briefcase that all but guarantees him a WWE World Heavyweight Championship reign.

Combined with a Kevin Owens-John Cena rematch, there is plenty to savor despite another short build between pay-per-views and a problem with predictability in the chase for the briefcase.

Potential Spoilers

Despite history being in his favor, don't count on Cena winning on Sunday. The fan favorite often quickly bounces back from losses, but WWE writers are reportedly considering doing something else.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingInc), there are some people within WWE Creative who believe the usual strategy of having Cena get his wins back isn't the way to go with his second clash with Owens.

That's good news for the NXT champ. If his backers are loud and persuasive enough, he may claim another victory over Cena, something few men have ever done.

Per Dave Scherer of PWInsider, WWE sent out an email hyping a live event in July. The matches it advertises offer potential clues as to who will leave Money in the Bank as champ, among other things:

  • Roman Reigns vs. WWE world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins
  • Bray Wyatt vs. intercontinental champion Ryback
  • United States champion John Cena vs. NXT champion Kevin Owens
  • Dolph Ziggler vs. Sheamus

If this is really what WWE has in mind for that July show, it means Rollins and Ryback are both retaining and moving on to new opponents. It also gives fans reason to believe Owens and Cena will continue their rivalry beyond Money in the Bank.

That could mean we see things escalate between the pair on Sunday, with the bout perhaps going to a no-contest.

Match Card

  • R-Truth vs. King Barrett (Pre-show)
  • Ryback vs. Big Show (Intercontinental Championship)
  • Nikki Bella vs. Paige (Divas Championship)
  • Kevin Owens vs. John Cena
  • The New Day vs. The Prime Time Players (Tag Team Championship)
  • Kane vs. Neville vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Randy Orton vs. Sheamus vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Roman Reigns (Money in the Bank ladder match)
  • Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose (ladder match for WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

Quick Predictions

  • King Barrett over R-Truth.
  • Ryback over Big Show.
  • Nikki over Paige.
  • Cena over Owens (disqualification).
  • The New Day retains.
  • Reigns wins Money in the Bank.
  • Rollins over Ambrose.

Pre-Show Bragging Rights

WWE hasn't treated Barrett's King of the Ring victory like much of anything, but it's enough of a boost up the card to get him a win over R-Truth.

The rapping wrestler is just a comedy act now. Unless he's facing Stardust, he just don't win anymore.

At least Barrett has a more up-and-down record of late, winning the IC title before going on a losing streak and winning the King of the Ring tournament before stumbling again. It's hard to call this one because it means so little, but Barrett's the slightly more significant Superstar and thus the safe bet.

Intercontinental Championship

The current story surrounding Ryback is supposed to be about his rise after years of setbacks. This is his first title reign, something WWE has billed as a landmark achievement for him.

It's too early to move away from that. It's too early to have him drop the belt, as there's been no time to let it advance his momentum at all.

Big Show is just a stepping stone here, just as he was for Reigns earlier this year.

Divas Championship

This is another hard-to-call matchup because there is so little going on story-wise. After having Naomi climb into contention, WWE has quickly swept her aside and inserted Paige with a threadbare narrative with which to work.

Paige has been promising change, talking about ridding the division of the Bellas.

That's something women have been promising to do for a long time. It doesn't happen here. WWE clearly likes Nikki as champ.

Count on her reign continuing past Money in the Bank.

Owens vs. Cena II

Having Owens lose hurts his upcoming matches with Samoa Joe and Finn Balor. It also deflates much of the power of his victory over Cena at Elimination Chamber.

The chances of WWE having him go 2-0 against the powerhouse atop the ladder, however, is extremely slim. Superstars may fell Cena once, but he most often rises in response and evens out his record with a win.

To handle this situation, then, the company's most probable route is to have Owens go wild mid-match and lose via disqualification. This gives Cena a win of sorts while keeping Owens strong. It would also set up a third match with the series relatively square.

Tag Team Championship

The Prime Time Players went from obscurity to contention in a hurry. To have the duo win the tag titles this soon is too early, a rush job that will lack drama.

The team's next crack at the championship feels like the beginning of a feud with the New Day rather than a brief visit to the No. 1 contender's spot. For one, the New Day doesn't have a ton of other options for opponents.

With that in mind, it's easy to envision Titus O'Neil and Darren Young coming up just short this time and receiving a rematch or two further down the road. The feud will have a chance to grow more intense that way.

In addition, the suspense over whether O'Neil and Young can climb the mountain can build over time.

Money in the Bank

Bleacher Report's Dan Pecoraro believes that Neville has a good shot of walking out of the arena with the Money in the Bank briefcase in hand:

Reigns is the clear favorite here, though.

Ziggler is busy with the Lana storyline. That surely spells a future collision with Rusev, one that could come as early as during the Money in the Bank match itself. WWE is unlikely to let him win the briefcase again anyway.

Not enough time has passed since Orton won the Money in the Bank contract and the world title for WWE to lean on that role again.

The rest of the field doesn't look promising, either.

Neville hasn't been around long enough. He doesn't have nearly the connection with the casual fan to leap to that level. Kane hasn't been a contender for years. Kingston is not anywhere near being a world title contender; he's a midcarder and a perpetual bridesmaid in Ladder matches.

Reigns has the been the focus of recent storylines leading up to this match. He's the guy WWE has been pushing for over the past year. He's the man to take this prize home.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Unless WWE veers off the path leading to Rollins against Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, don't bet against the Architect.

That's the logical marquee matchup for that event. It makes more sense to have the WWE title be a part of it, as it's the object that Rollins swiped from the Beast Incarnate.

That leaves Ambrose out of the championship party for now. He's been a fun contender, but WWE feels more committed to Rollins. He's been the one standing in the center of the never-ending Authority storyline. The Lunatic Fringe is just visiting.

The Ladder match stipulation allows Rollins to use the Authority as much as he needs to or for something nutty to happen like Reigns turning on Ambrose. Either way, the moment he thought he won the title at Elimination Chamber will be the closest Ambrose will get to being champion for the time being.
