No Mutiny At Michigan, Wolverines Crush Broncos 31-7
Problems? There's no problems at Michigan, and maybe we were foolish to think so.
Amid all of the distractions and heat on the program from last week, the one thing I wondered coming into the Michigan-Western Michigan game was if coach, Rich Rodriguez still had control of his team.
I think the score of the game speaks for itself. This team is all in, and that's a good thing.
Other questions were also answered in this game.
Michigan had three quarterbacks before the game started, they emerged with a starter in Tate Forcier.
Forcier displayed the fantastic accuracy he was known for in high school, completing 65% of his passes for 182 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He rushed for an additional 33 yards.
At times Denard Robinson came into the game, and at one key moment, displayed his incredible speed, dancing around defenders before breaking away for a 43-yard rushing touchdown.
Robinson definitely has a place on this team as a situational quarterback, but Tate Forcier left little doubt that this is his team.
As impressive as the offense was, the defense was more impressive, at least for the first half.
Facing a future NFL quarterback in Tim Hiller, the Michigan secondary and pass rush suffocated the Bronco's star quarterback. In fact by the end of the second half, Western Michigan had under 75 total offensive yards and not a point was scored.
Defensive Coordinator, Greg Robinson had Michigan's defense looking like the Miami Hurricanes of old, just swarming over the opponents. It's early, but it's safe to say, that this was a brilliant hire.
Michigan led 31-0, and the Big House was the loudest it had been in over a year.
As is human nature, Michigan backed off in the second half, culminating in Western Michigan ending the shutout with a 4th quarter, 73-yard touchdown pass from Hiller.
Hiller would finish with 259 passing yards. A monumental task, considering how bottled up he was in the first half.
Throughout the game, it was difficult to see any resemblance between this year's team and last years. There was no sputtering drives when Forcier was at the helm, there were no turnovers from Michigan either. Just solid sustained drives resulting in touchdowns.
It is however, important to keep this win in perspective. Michigan should note that you don't earn any accolades for beating Western Michigan, and a true test for this team is coming next week against Notre Dame. The Irish issued a 35-0 beatdown of their own over Nevada.
For the first time in a few years, Michigan and Notre Dame will be entering the rivalry game each coming off high notes.
For now though, it is nice to open the season with a win, especially after the week Michigan has endured.
It was also inspiring to see the crowd get behind Michigan's embattled coach. There were numerous signs displaying the words "In Rod We Trust."
I can't help but think that maybe I was wrong. The team is obviously behind Rich Rodriguez all the way, and apparently so were the fans at Michigan Stadium today. That's good enough for me.
Perhaps Rich Rodriguez deserves the benefit of the doubt after all. I have no room to criticize the man after a win like this anyway.
Let's hope that today's win was the start of something good, the renaissance of Michigan football. We'll find out what the expectations for this team are next week against the Leprechauns of South Bend.
