5 Possible Transfer Destinations for Chelsea Midfielder Oscar

Garry HayesJun 3, 2015

Now the Premier League season is over, the big talking points in the coming weeks and months will be transfers.

Who's going where? Who's interested in signing the biggest names in Europe? Who needs to sell to balance the books? Which players are desperate to leave their club for pastures new? Which clubs are desperate to offload an expensive star?

Yes, silly season is here and, as ever, Chelsea will be among the leading clubs making headlines.

While we're expecting Jose Mourinho to make some moves in the transfer market, there are also a few question marks hanging over some of the Chelsea manager's own players.

Oscar is one of those, with his poor end to 2014/15 suggesting he may have fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

If Chelsea were to cash in on the Brazilian, where will his final destination be?

Tapping into the rumour mill (and adding some of our own thoughts into the mix for good measure), Bleacher Report highlights five clubs at which Oscar could end up should he depart Chelsea this summer.

Real Madrid

A key thing to remember in any transfer is that it's not all about money.

Sure, it plays a big part, but then so does bargaining. What can one club offer another in order to tempt them into doing business?

Where Oscar is concerned, Chelsea have a valuable commodity that can give them some sway when looking to poach some big names from their European rivals.

Could Oscar be used as a makeweight to snatch a star from Real Madrid?

John Terry has signed a contract extension to remain at Stamford Bridge for at least another season. Regardless of his continued ability to compete at the highest level, time is running out on his career; Jose Mourinho needs to find a long-term replacement.

Many have identified Raphael Varane as being that man, but if Real are to allow him to leave, it won't be on the cheap.

Could Chelsea use Oscar as bait in any potential deal?

Atletico Madrid

Moving across the Spanish capital to the Vicente Calderon Stadium, those same principles discussed in our previous slide seem relevant in predicting Oscar moving to Atletico Madrid.

As the Evening Standard reports, Chelsea are known admirers of Antoine Griezmann, and with a £42 million buy-out clause in his contract, the French ace is certainly attainable.

With Chelsea's strict financial model these days, Jose Mourinho knows he must sell before he can splash out on big names, which is where Oscar comes into the picture.

Should Atletico offload Griezmann, they'll need to find a replacement to fill the void in attacking midfield.

With his ability to operate behind the striker, Oscar would certainly fit the bill.

Oscar plus cash for Griezmann is a move that has the potential to satisfy all parties: Chelsea get their man for relatively less outlay than initially expected and Atletico aren't significantly weakened in the process.

Wolfsburg

Of all the clubs we'll mention in this slideshow, Wolfsburg will appear the most fanciful when it comes to Oscar leaving Stamford Bridge.

After all, they don't have the same profile as the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

Then again, the Bundesliga side have done some good business with Chelsea in the past year or so when it comes to struggling attacking midfielders.

Indeed, Wolfsburg haven't been afraid to splash the cash in their dealings with Chelsea. In January 2014, they signed Kevin De Bruyne for £18 million, while more recently Andre Schurrle left Stamford Bridge for £22 million.

Both players had become peripheral figures under Jose Mourinho, much like Oscar in the second part of 2014/15.

De Bruyne has certainly benefited from the move to the Bundesliga, while Schurrle has shown some glimpses of his talent, too.

The business relationship is there, so could Chelsea tempt Wolfsburg for a third time?

Paris Saint-Germain

4 of 5

Paris Saint-Germain are in the business of signing some of the world's best young talent.

Just look at their squad and it says a lot about where Laurent Blanc and the club's hierarchy are attempting to take things.

They like Brazilians, too, with no fewer than five in their current squad, including ex-Chelsea defender David Luiz.

Last summer, PSG were also reportedly chasing Oscar. They were prepared to pay £40 million for him, according to Jason Burt of the Telegraph.

PSG are among the few clubs in Europe that can afford to take Oscar off Chelsea's hands. Signing him will cost big money if any player exchange isn't involved, and the wages to supplement his move will also be a significant burden.

In exchange, PSG can offer the player Champions League football and a guarantee of silverware—they've won the French title for the past three seasons running.

One potential hiccup to any move could be Oscar's apparent simulation that saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic sent off when Chelsea and PSG faced each other in the Champions League this season.

That left plenty of bad blood on the night, but then this is football, and as we've learned in the past, footballers and fans have short memories when it benefits them.

Juventus

5 of 5

We've known for some time that Juventus have been admirers of Oscar, and recent developments suggest the Serie A champions may well decide this summer is the right time to make a move for him.

If that proves the case, they may well have up the ante somewhat.

John Cross of the Mirror recently reported Juventus have tabled a bid for Oscar—of just £9 million!

That's less than half of what Chelsea paid for the Brazilian in 2012, so we can expect any negotiations to involve a far more significant sum.

Money aside, a move to Juventus makes sense for Oscar. Paul Pogba may well leave Turin this summer, leaving a space for Oscar to fill in midfield.

The big question surrounding him is whether or not he can last a full campaign in English football. The Premier League is a ferocious beast to master and not all players—regardless of talent—can adapt easily.

Has that been Oscar's problem?

Games are played at a slower pace in Italy, which may well suit Oscar's game more. Added to that, Juventus are Champions League finalists and Italian champions, so joining Massimiliano Allegri's side would hardly be a step backward.
