Sprint Cup Chase 2015: NASCAR Standings and Schedule After Dover 400

Joseph ZuckerMay 31, 2015

Jimmie Johnson is just showing off now. The six-time Sprint Cup champion earned his fourth win of the 2015 season, further consolidating his position atop the Chase standings. Johnson finished a little less than a half-second ahead of Kevin Harvick in Sunday's FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks.

The victory was particularly notable for Johnson since it was his 10th career checkered flag at the Dover International Speedway, which puts him in elite company with regard to dominance at one track, per Hendrick Motorsports:

There's still a lot of time between now and the Challenger Round, but it might be safe to say that Johnson will head into the Chase with the most points. A two-race cushion is fairly substantial at this stage of the year.

And who's to say he's done winning? According to ESPN Stats & Info, Johnson has won seven more races than the next-closest driver since 2010:

I feel like a broken record saying this, but Martin Truex Jr. continues to be one of the most consistent drivers on the Sprint Cup circuit. Yet he's still looking for that first win in 2015. The 34-year-old earned his 12th top-10 finish in 13 races after placing sixth.

Yahoo Sports' Nick Bromberg wrote that Truex taking two tires late the race did more than anything to erase his hopes of winning: "While Johnson and Harvick stayed out during the caution for the Busch-Scott crash, Truex took two tires and restarted in the second row. He never challenged for the lead (thanks to a well-timed block by Kasey Kahne on the last restart) and finished sixth."

Johnson was one of the drivers who gambled and opted not to take fresh tires. He felt his win ultimately vindicated that decision.

"I guess guys on two (fresh) tires weren't all that fast," he said, per Fox Sports' Tom Jensen. "Chad (Knaus, crew chief) said something about that to me on the radio and they never really came. The 4 (Harvick) and I did just fine on our old tires and held those guys off. It was a hard-fought day."

Truex led more laps than any other driver (131), which is the second week in a row he has led at least 100 laps in a losing effort. ProSportsInfo.com's Steve Merril highlighted how Truex continues to dominate races for long stretches but falls just short in the end:

The silver lining for the No. 78 car is that Johnson's winning means another driver didn't get the victory and shoot up the standings. The more repeat winners, the better for Truex; that way accruing a wealth of points will be enough to get him into the Chase.

Both Kasey Kahne and Aric Almirola are on shakier ground than Truex, but they at least improved their respective places in the standings. Kahne went from 13th to 12th, while Almirola gained a spot as well, rising from 15th to 14th.

Meanwhile, the top three drivers on the outside looking in remain the same: Clint Bowyer, Danica Patrick and Greg Biffle.

Bowyer gained a little ground on Ryan Newman for 16th. He's now 37 points off the Chase, which is a manageable gap to try to close.

Patrick and Biffle, on the other hand, fell back a bit. They're 48 and 58 points back respectively.

Luckily for them and every other driver out of the top 16, 23 races are a lot of time to make something happen. All it takes is for everything to click one day in order to get into Victory Lane. And one win is enough to get in the Chase.

Of course, Johnson can't keep hogging all of the wins for himself over the coming weeks and months.
