9. Mase "THE REALIST" Mangum

Greg MangumSep 4, 2009

Mase, as well as “Dancin” Dan, was a no-show at the draft.  Who knows, maybe they were out on a secret romantic dinner together?  Nevertheless, Mase was on the g-mail dropping WTF’s every 5 picks or so, constantly asking, “WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG!!!???” obviously in all caps.  We’ll slap him with the #9 ranking and let him prove otherwise.

Roster

QB’s:     Aaron Rodgers, Trent Edwards, Kerry Collins

RB’s:      Michael Turner, Brian Westbrook, Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson

WR’s:    Torry Holt, Antonio Bryant, Santana Moss, Laurent Robinson

TE’s:       Jason Witten, Zach Miller

DEF:       New Orleans

Quarterbacks:

Aaron Rodgers will be nothing short of sensational again this year with one of the best passing attacks in the league.  Trent Edwards should improve upon last year’s sub-par season with the addition of T.O.  Trent is a very accurate passer and is very comfortable in the short passing game, but will have to stretch the ball down the field to warrant a weekly starting position in fantasy.  This is very capable with Owens and the speedy Lee Evans on opposite sides of the ball, but the Bills need to keep a box of tissues handy just in case.  Kerry Collins will be used sparingly, as the Titans rely on the run and defense, but having a solidified starter on the bench is always helpful.

Running backs:

Most definitely the backbone position of the FAVRE franchise, the running backs should supply a huge percent of Mase’s weekly point total.  Michael Turner slipped all the way down to #9 in the draft because of his liability in the passing game, but you can’t take away the 17 TD’s and nearly 1700 yards he amassed last year.  While one shouldn’t expect a repeat performance from last year, the Falcons have always been a great running team and should be once again this year.  Brian Westbrook will be the key to the season for the Mase man.  At #13 overall, he is an absolute steal if he is able to stay healthy.  Most owners are shying away from the versatile Westbrook this year, considering his age, injury history and LeSean McCoy, an explosive rookie out of Pittsburgh with unlimited potential.  However, as long as he is fully healthy, Westbrook will be the guy and McCoy will wait patiently on the bench.  I really like the combo of Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson.  Jackson will be a solid feature back during Lynch’s 3 game suspension and when Marshawn comes back he should take over his role.  The downside here is if Jackson excels in the first few weeks, he could cause a bit of a timeshare in Buffalo, cutting into Marshawn’s carries and limiting his value.

Wide Receivers:

This could be a question mark, as the starters are all a little suspect and there isn’t much depth behind them.  However, it should be noted that all 3 starters are true #1’s on their given team and the #2 is quite far behind, so the opportunity for frequent looks will definitely be there.  Torry Holt is coming off a miserable year and looks for a fresh start in Jacksonville where the next best receiver is Troy Williamson or Mike Walker.  In Washington, you have Santana Moss, then a distinct drop off to Antwaan Randle El.  Antonio Bryant quietly put together a huge season in Tampa last year, catching 6+ balls in 8 out of 16 games with 6 games over the 100 yd. mark including one 200 yd. performance.  The quarterback situation in Tampa makes Bryant somewhat of a risky play, but he’s no doubt the top target for whoever is behind center.  Laurent Robinson has been dynamite thus far in the preseason, but only time will tell if he is able to carry his production into the regular season.  The Rams will probably be playing catch up quite a bit this year, and Robinson could be the beneficiary of some 4th quarter garbage yards.

The Rest:

Jason Witten could quite possibly be the steal of the draft in Round 4.  I disagree with most experts that say you shouldn’t bother spending a high pick on a tight end this year.  There are some solid ones you can get in the later rounds, but none should be remotely close to the points Witten will put up this year.  With T.O. gone, Romo can look to his favorite target without hesitation and will definitely need to, considering their now star receiver in Roy Williams only reeled in 36 catches last year.  Look for Witten to get over 10 looks every week.  Zach Miller is a solid tight end as Oakland’s leading receiver (whatever that is worth), but will be buried on the bench behind J-Witt.  Like Orlovsky, the Mase will also play the matchup game on D.  Week 1’s New Orleans play should manage a few picks against the Lions, especially in Stafford’s first NFL game, if he is indeed named the starter.

Season Outlook:

As I mentioned before, Brian Westbrook will be the main key to the Mase’s season.  Should he stay healthy, the Mase will certainly be able to compete for a championship.  Other keys involve some level of consistency from his wide receiving core.  If they are unable to get the job done, he will have to rely on at least 2-3 huge performances between Rodgers and the running back core per week.  Not much depth to be had on the roster right now, which is not uncommon coming from a manager who regularly forfeits his last few picks.  However, don’t be surprised to see this manager pick up several gems over the course of the season, as he as a keen eye for talent and a great understanding of favorable matchups for players.
