Barcelona vs. Athletic Bilbao: Winners and Losers from 2015 Copa Del Rey Final

Karl MatchettMay 30, 2015

Barcelona completed a domestic double in their own stadium on Saturday night as they beat Athletic Bilbao by a 3-1 scoreline in the Copa del Rey final.

Lionel Messi scored a magnificent solo goal to put Barcelona in control amid a dominant first half, with Neymar adding a second soon after. Messi bagged another to make sure of the game before Inaki Williams' consolation for Athletic, after he had also struck the woodwork in the first half.

Here are all our winners and losers from a tremendous cup final at the Camp Nou.

Winner: "It's Lionel Messi's World, and We're All Just Living in It"

1 of 5

So spoke several Twitter accounts after the first Barcelona goal went in. We start with the greatest impact from the best player: Lionel Messi and his wonderful, unstoppable goal.

A solo run down the right flank saw the Argentinian evade five challenges from four different defenders—showing his trademark acceleration, skill and change of direction on more than one occasion—before he beat Iago Herrerin at the near post.

Messi had already set up what should have been the opening goal with a pass to Neymar, who was flagged offside, while he was also involved in the second goal to open up Athletic's defence. It was a tremendous showing all round, capped by the No. 10 rattling in his second and Barcelona's third of the night.

Winner: Inaki Williams

2 of 5

The young Basque forward Inaki Williams provides a quicker and more unpredictable threat in the final third than Athletic's longstanding, established players, and it was from him that the main danger came.

In the first 45 minutes, Williams came closest to scoring for his side with a great volley onto the crossbar, but his pressing and work rate was also instrumental in Athletic's early game plan to keep the ball as high up the field as possible. A little more luck, and he could have netted another after closing down Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, too.

Williams got his goal in the closing stages with a fine header into the far corner, and there will be lots more to come from this exciting young talent next season.

Loser: Ernesto Valverde, Hampered by Absences

3 of 5

Athletic manager Ernesto Valverde knew he was always facing an uphill battle to beat the champions of Spain, but his task was made all the more difficult with several key absentees.

Iker Muniain has, of course, suffered a long-term injury, while Oscar de Marcos was also unavailable. With Andoni Iraola pressed further forward, it meant Valverde had little choice but to go with Unai Bustinza at right-back, making just his fourth appearance of the season.

The Basque side worked hard, and although they created little in the end, they gave another good account of themselves—on and off the pitch. They showed why they have been able to make such an improvement over the second half of the season.

Winner: Iago Herrerin

4 of 5

He might have ended on the losing side, but Athletic goalkeeper Iago Herrerin put in a brilliant performance to keep his team in the game for a long spell in the first half.

Brave, close-range saves at the feet of Neymar and Ivan Rakitic were notable, as was a tip over the bar from Messi's swerving free-kick. Herrerin also made two or three other saves as Barcelona dominated the first 45 minutes. After the break, he had less to do but was still alert in getting off his line to thwart Luis Suarez and make a few routine stops.

The second choice for most of this year, Herrerin once again showed he is capable of displacing Gorka Iraizoz with his performance.

Winner: Luis Enrique

5 of 5

The domestic double is secured, and Barcelona are now just one game away from another fantastic treble season, with the Champions League final against Juventus to play next weekend.

Manager Luis Enrique has led his side to success on two fronts in his first season with the club, and he's also got his star names performing to such an extent that there are real questions being asked over whether this Barcelona side is as good as Pep Guardiola's Barca teams in years past. Of course, Guardiola won the treble in his own first campaign, so Enrique is looking to match that on a personal level.

For now, Enrique's tactics and selections keep looking absolutely spot on. It would take a brave bet to go against Barcelona completing that final leg of the season in style.
