The View From Houston ( MD Anderson) By a Phillies Fan
There are many ways I have looked at sports in my life - from a royal pain in the ass to wow - gotta' catch a game. It all depended on my mood and what else I wanted to do at any given time. In my home, sports won out about 75% of the time and then we followed the games we did not watch, in the car on the radio and now on the Blackberry.
Never did I think that sports would make the difference in what promises to be a long haul til at least Super Bowl Sunday. I am typing the blog today from a comupter terminal supplied by the good folks at MD Anderson Cancer Center. It is therapeutic to be able to do so. This hospital is so beyond anything I have seen in Philly or NYC - truly state of the art and Jeff's best chance for a complete remission. He is currently getting a CT Scan and I will catch up about the sports.
As I have noted in past blogs, we have a room which faces the new football stadium as well as the old Astrodome. That was a great start - having watched the game Monday during our fantasy draft - it is exciting to open the room curtains to Reliant Field every morning. Add to that the Phillies being in town and we sit 5 rows behind the visitors dug out.
All of this excitement gives Jeff a chance to forget for a little while exactly what he has and why we are in Houston. The high school football is also a great diversion and so great to see cheerleaders and bands as well. Penn State plays tonight and our new next to favorite team the Longhorns play tomorrow.
All in all I have discovered the healing power of sports. I highly recommend it. It also helps the person without the disease...just a few hours respite a week can make all the difference in a patient's attitude.
Go Phils, go PSU...Eagles lost and I did not watch Vick play, hee hee! Elligible game 3 means good bye AJ Feeley and hello to a sociopath who may help the team but as yet has not offered to sit down with me and talk. Ah, his loss!
