5 Things We Learned from Chelsea's 2014/15 Premier League Season

Garry HayesMay 27, 2015

With two trophies secured and just four defeats across the four competitions in which they competed, Chelsea can certainly look back on 2014/15 with a sense of pride.

Jose Mourinho's team completely dominated English football, winning the Premier League at a canter.

There was plenty of controversy along the way; there were claims of "campaigns" against the club, those Diego Costa "crimes" and even a suggestion that Chelsea are boring.

Then there were the moments of brilliance.

There was Oscar's sublime effort against QPR in November, Andre Schurrle's team goal against Burnley on the opening weekend of the season and, of course, when the Premier League and League Cup trophies were hoisted in victory.

Indeed, 2014/15 was a fine vintage for Chelsea, but what did we learn from the campaign?

Bleacher Report takes a look at five areas.

Think Fast, Get Your Rewards Later

Eden Hazard has swept the board when it comes to the personal accolades this season.

The Belgian has won the PFA Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, the Barclays Player of the Year and just this week was named Chelsea's Player of the Year and the Players' Player of the Year.

Catching our breath after that list of gongs, it's been an incredible campaign for him.

What's made it an equally memorable season for Chelsea is winning the Premier League and the Capital One Cup.

Hazard was instrumental in that, but it's the addition of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas that have proved the difference.

Chelsea acted fast to get them to Stamford Bridge last summer, and while the rest of the Premier League's big clubs were negotiating the transfer market in pre-season, Chelsea were settled, building for what we saw over the past nine months.

Jose Mourinho's team looked the most complete, and it was the way in which the club conducted its business that contributed significantly to that.

There's a lesson for their rivals.

Pragmatic Football Wins Trophies

Jose Mourinho's speech at the Chelsea Player of the Year awards has to be among the top laugh-out-loud moments of 2014/15.

It was the stuff of genius, mocking the criticism of his team as being boring.

Mourinho cares not for that, his biggest concern being winning titles.

The YouTube clip above shows Mourinho in action, making his point about an emphasis on possession-based football, on pretty football.

The only one that matters is winning football.

Chelsea were scintillating at times in 2014/15, and when the moment called for it, they were pragmatic.

And where did it get them? To the very top, of course.

While the other clubs were caught up in other things, it was all about winning for Chelsea, regardless.

They got the reward they deserved.

The Kids Are All Right at Stamford Bridge

3 of 5

Come the end of the 2014/15 season, Jose Mourinho was able to give debuts to four of his most promising academy players while also continuing the integration of the talented Nathan Ake.

Those Chelsea debutants were Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Andreas Christensen, Izzy Brown and Dominic Solanke.

We know how talented these kids are given the success they have enjoyed in youth football, dominating their age group in recent times.

Chelsea have now won back-to-back FA Youth Cups and also lifted the UEFA Youth League this season.

The big test is them becoming first-team regulars, and that process has already started.

Chelsea are showing a real desire to blood their youngsters, and it's a promising site to see so many in and around Mourinho's first-team squad.

Cesc Fabregas No Longer Has Unfinished Business in England

4 of 5

Before he joined Chelsea, Cesc Fabregas' solitary piece of silverware in England was the FA Cup with Arsenal.

Indeed, the Spaniard commented upon his return that he had unfinished business on these shores, and by joining Chelsea, he hoped to put a few things to bed.

In just nine months, he has done that.

Chelsea lifted the League Cup in March, and two months later, after trying for seven years at Arsenal, Fabregas finally got his hands on the Premier League trophy.

Those demons can finally be put to rest.

Jose Mourinho Remains the Special One

5 of 5

When Chelsea didn't win anything in his first season back at Stamford Bridge, the question was whether or not Jose Mourinho could be viewed as the Special One.

He's more than cleared up any of those doubts this season.

Mourinho has recreated Chelsea in his vision, and it's a stunning one.

Has a team ever been so dominant in a season in English football?

Chelsea led the way in the Premier League from the opening day, and try as they might, nobody could catch them.

Mourinho's Blues were simply too good for the rest.

There's still work to do given the disappointment they suffered at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, but as this team moves forward with Mourinho leading them, we can be sure things will be put right.

Is Mourinho still the Special One? We were daft for even asking.
