The Snarkiest People in Sports Right Now

Nick DimengoMay 28, 2015

Though we all try to avoid having a snarky personality, it's just unavoidable at times, as bad days and annoying things seem to happen on the reg.

While it's OK for us normal folks to bash someone or something occasionally, a few sports figures aren't always as lucky, as they have to deal with media and opponents who pin them as a little bit of a jerk when they bring out the snark.

Sometimes, though, those athletes and coaches provide absolute gold, and because of that, I'm giving you the snarkiest people in sports right now—so don't get on these guys' bad sides.

Steve Spurrier

1 of 13

If you're compiling a group of sports figures who would end up in the Hall of Fame of Snark, South Carolina Gamecocks football head coach Steve Spurrier would certainly be in it.

One of the brashest people in college sports, the Ol' Ball Coach has had his fair share of snarky moments, even if it means taking a little bit of a shot at his own team.

My favorite, though? How about after a 54-3 win over the Kentucky Wildcats during the 2011 season, where, when giving his postgame interview, Spurrier boldly said with a smirk, "We could have picked up 70 or 80 points today. But 50 was enough."

Way to show respect to the opponent there, coach.

David Ortiz

2 of 13

(Note: The above video contains profanity)

Don't get me wrong, Boston Red Sox potential future Hall of Fame slugger David Ortiz knows how to have fun, but he's also about as outspoken as they come.

Big Papi put that on full display during this year's spring training, where, when asked about the new pace of play rules, he went off, spewing about how he was straight-up pissed over MLB implementing something that could break up a batter's routine.

While talented, Ortiz seems to have a hot head, which often leads to him having his fair share of episodes, if you will.

Richard Sherman

3 of 13

Though there are plenty of people who might dislike him, Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks is, without a doubt, one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL—and he'll let everyone know it.

When Sherman's not shutting down an opposing team's best wideout, he's usually talking crap about anything he doesn't believe is true.

Coming into the league from Stanford as a fifth-round pick may have given Sherman a chip on his shoulder, but he carries himself as if he has always been the top dog—which he is now.

Just ask Tom Brady or Patrick Peterson about Sherman's snarky remarks.

Vince McMahon

4 of 13

Let's be honest here for a second: Vince McMahon—while successful—also happens to be the CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, meaning he is paid to perform and be about as snarky as possible for entertainment purposes.

And, my goodness, is he a damn king at doing it.

In his more than 30 years running the business, McMahon has had well-publicized—and, in some cases, arraigned—beefs with a number of performers, with his most famous coming with former wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin, where the two were constantly at each other's necks.

Knowing how to push Austin's buttons with his chiding comments, wrestling fans know exactly why McMahon falls so high on this list.

Arian Foster

5 of 13

You've really got to hand it to Arian Foster of the Houston Texans, because it seems like he knows how to have a little bit of fun.

Typically labeled as one of the more interesting players in the NFL, the former rushing champion is at his best when the cameras are rolling, providing soundbites and viral Internet moments anytime he speaks.

Oh, and if you don't happen to follow him on Twitter, do yourself a favor and see some of the things he says, because he's entertaining, witty and snarky all at once—especially when it comes to his reaction over the New England Patriots' penalties from Deflategate.

Marshawn Lynch

6 of 13

There are a few people on this list who are actually a part of the media, but for Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, his snark comes anytime he comes into a conversation with a camera and microphone.

One of the more interesting athletes in all of sports, Lynch might go all beast mode on opposing tacklers, but he says, well, nearly nothing when he's being asked questions.

OK, I guess he does say something—but, as snarky as possible—it's the exact same thing over and over, refusing any attempt at giving the answer a reporter wants to hear.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

7 of 13

An imposing force on the soccer pitch thanks to his 6'5" height, Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is about as entertaining with some of his responses as he is when scoring goals.

Almost entirely in the spirit of this piece—I jest, of course—news broke just the other day that Zlatan gave one of the most compelling snarky lines ever.

With writer David Lagercrantz pulling together information on the prominent player for a book he's ghostwriting, Ibrahimovic was told by Lagercrantz that he had just completed the autobiography of David Beckham.

Rather than gush over Beckham and hail him—as nearly everyone else does—Ibra gave his typical reply, snarkily asking, "Who the f--k is David Beckham?"

Seeing as how the two played for Paris Saint-Germain together in 2013, it's clear Ibrahimovic wasn't all that amused by the writer telling him about his previous projects.

Nick Saban

8 of 13

Coming from the coaching tree of Bill Belichick certainly has its perks, doesn't it?

In addition to the knowledge and greatness the New England Patriots head coach gives, a guy like, say, Alabama Crimson Tide head football coach Nick Saban also picks up a few tips on how to handle reporter's questions.

Though Saban has been known to give more than his fair share of snarky replies, the one he gave ESPN's Heather Cox during halftime of a game against the Michigan Wolverines a couple of seasons ago was one of his all-time best moments.

Tell us how you really feel about running backs by committee, Nick.

Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless

9 of 13

When it comes to snark in sports media, there just aren't many people who can match the ESPN duo of Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless, who cause viewers around the world to mute their TV sets anytime one, or both, appears on screen.

Both outspoken and bold, these two play off one another perfectly—if you're into the whole arguing thing—rarely letting the other get his point across before the other interrupts, as well as trying their damnedest to sway the other's opinion.

From Tim Tebow to LeBron James to Deflategate, these two offer sarcastic replies to piss the other one off as much, and as often, as possible.

Their bickering is as legendary as mine with my sister over who got to ride shotgun—and we were in our teens at the time.

Rex Ryan

10 of 13

Say what you will about new Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, one thing he's always good for is a solid quote.

Of course, that doesn't always mean what he says doesn't ruffle some feathers.

While Rex was best known for his bold predictions early on in his head coaching career with the New York Jets, in the years since he was commonly known for his snarky remarks, more often than not coming at the expense of the fans of his former team.

Now that he's with the Bills, though, don't think Ryan will be taking a step back from speaking his mind or making predictions—as he already has—and, of course, casually taking shots at his AFC East nemesis, the New England Patriots.

Kobe Bryant

11 of 13

One of the fiercest competitors sports has ever seen, watching his Los Angeles Lakers lose mightily—and the L.A. Clippers win more—these past few years has to have taken a toll on Kobe Bryant.

We all saw what the Black Mamba's reaction was when he saw the video of his teammates acting foolishly following an overtime win against the Boston Celtics earlier this season, but, as one of the snarkiest athletes right now, you knew he wasn't going to stop there.

After hearing the news that his Lakers had "won" by snagging the No. 2 overall pick in this summer's NBA draft, Bryant made one last dig at his teammates, tweeting out that, since his squad played like crap all season, it was only right they got a high pick.

Oh, Kobe, never change.

Bill Belichick

12 of 13

Unless you're a New England Patriots fan, there probably isn't too much love for the team's four-time Super Bowl winning head coach, Bill Belichick.

Both smug and a little rude, Belichick might be about as tight-lipped as it comes, which comes across as extremely snarky when he gives an answer to a question. After all, this is the same dude who thought he was giving another team an advantage if he didn't list quarterback Tom Brady as probable for so many years, as if No. 12 was ever really going to sit.

Belichick and Brady have one of the best bonds in sports, so when a reporter asked if the future Hall of Fame signal-caller might be benched early in the 2014 season for a rookie, well, ol' Bill gave us another classic reply—which included an unamused chuckle.

Gregg Popovich

13 of 13

Without a doubt, there's no one on the planet who's quite as snarky in front of the camera as San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich—who always seems to prove just how awesome he is when put on the spot.

Sure, the guy is a future Hall of Fame head coach after leading his Spurs teams to the postseason in each of the past 18 years, ending five of those as NBA champions, but he might want to work on his people skills just a little bit more.

Well, OK, he's great at handling superstar hoops players and meshing them together, but not nearly as great when answering a simple question, as he often seems disinterested, unamused and the definition of the word snarky.
