Di Matteo's men endured a difficult end to the season, winning just two of their final 10 domestic matches after beating Real Madrid 4-3 in the Champions League, as reported by Soccerway.
The departing boss suggested differing opinions over the club's future forced him to move on, per Matt Morlidge of the MailOnline:
"I presented an idea for a possible successful future and the necessary conditions to put that idea into effect. Despite the fact that my discussions with (general manager) Horst Heldt were constructive, at a certain point it became clear that the club's view differed and would be unable to create those conditions in the foreseeable future.
The frustration at the club after an unsatisfactory second half of the season is too great. With the club unable to create what I consider to be the necessary conditions it is not possible to guarantee the success expected by a club like Schalke 04. Therefore I think a fresh start is best for a club and its supporters who have become very close to my heart.
"

Horst Heldt confirmed Di Matteo made the final call to leave, per Morlidge: "Roberto had a clear vision of the club's future. When it became obvious that we had different views on the future of the club he always had the best interests of the club in mind regarding potential solutions."
Discontent has been rife at the Veltins Arena, with star players Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam sacked after the May defeat to Cologne, as reported by Jack De Menezes of the Independent.
Schalke finished sixth in the Bundesliga this season, failing to qualify for the Champions League. In fact, surprise package Borussia Monchengladbach concluded the campaign 18 points ahead in third, a complete failing for the Gelsenkirchen club.

At the age of 44, Di Matteo will now be looking to find his fifth club to manage, having previously spent time in charge of Milton Keynes Dons, West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea in England.
