Liverpool Transfer News: Latest Anfield Rumours Ahead of Summer Window

Gianni VerschuerenMay 24, 2015

Liverpool enter the summer transfer window with plenty of question marks following the embarrassing 6-1 defeat at the hands of Stoke City and the uncertainty surrounding the futures of manager Brendan Rodgers and youngster Raheem Sterling at Anfield.

The latter seems bent on leaving the club, and according to the latest rumours, Manchester City are willing to use striker Edin Dzeko to facilitate a deal, according to the Sunday People's Neil Moxley (via the Daily Mirror).

As shared by City Watch, the Bosnia international would only be part of a package that would likely include a hefty fee, as well:

After a promising start to the campaign, Sterling's season took a turn for the worse in 2015, and rumours of a potential departure from Anfield have been swirling for the past months.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe recently looked at potential landing spots, which included City, and he believes there's a very good chance Sterling will not be a member of the squad next season:

If Sterling does leave, the Reds will be desperate to bring back as many assets as possible in return. Cash to make up for a lack of Champions League football is a great starting point, but a player like Dzeko wouldn't be a bad return, either.

He fits a clear need for the Reds, who lack a top striker, and he has plenty of Premier League experience already. With Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony blocking his path to the starting XI, his value isn't extremely high, so Liverpool would still see a nice chunk of cash move to Anfield along with the forward.

A deal with City is one of many options Rodgers will have on the table during the summer, and if Dzeko is part of such a move, it's certainly an avenue worth exploring.

James Milner Reportedly Snubs Arsenal for Liverpool

According to the Daily Star's Steve Millar, another Citizen will certainly play for the Reds next season, as free agent James Milner will move to Anfield over the Emirates Stadium during the summer.

The versatile midfielder has been a great contributor for the Citizens but spends most of his time on the bench when everyone is healthy, and manager Manuel Pellegrini recently conceded the England international would have to put his future first, as shared by ESPN FC's Ben Dinnery:

Similar to Sterling, Milner's future will dominate the headlines throughout the summer, or until a decision is made. Certain media outlets have already begun the silly season, with reports surfacing the England international was offered an astronomical contract by City, via FourFourTwo's Alex Chaffer:

City will offer Milner a tantalising wage packet to stay at the Etihad, but they won't make him one of their highest paid players. A move to a new club still seems more likely, and as a free agent, the 29-year-old presents solid value.

Milner will ever be a world-class option in midfield, but he's a battle-tested Premier League contributor with a healthy work ethic. It never hurts bringing players like him into the fold, particularly on a free transfer.

Reds Eyeing Fiorentina's Norberto Neto

Simon Mignolet bounced back from a miserable start to the season and established himself as a solid goalkeeper for Liverpool in 2014-15, but the Sunday Times (h/t Daily Star's Alex Wood) believes the Reds will still make a move for Fiorentina's Norberto Neto.

According to the Daily Mail's Simon Jones, the Brazilian free agent has already agreed to a pre-contract with Juventus, and Liverpool could be forced to pay Juventus if the stopper were to break their deal.

Neto recently received his first call-up to the Brazilian national team, per Sky Sports' Paulo Freitas, replacing Valencia's Diego Alves:

Neto is a solid stopper who would be a good fit as a No. 2 behind Mignolet, but if the reports of him agreeing to a deal with Juventus are true, the value is no longer there for Liverpool. On a free transfer, he could have been a steal, but it makes little sense to pay several millions for a likely backup.

Marco Storari, the longtime backup behind Gianluigi Buffon, could leave Turin during the summer, and Neto would be an excellent fit to take that role. If the contract has already been agreed, the Reds would be better off looking elsewhere.
