Crowne Plaza Invitational 2015: Leaderboard Scores and Highlights from Friday
The tide took a turn on Friday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational with a new leader. Kevin Na put together his second straight low score, this one a 66, to finish atop the leaderboard with a total score of 10 under par.
In fact, Na is the only player who is double digits under par after 36 holes. Ian Poulter is the only player within striking distance of the 31-year-old at eight under par. No one else is within three shots halfway through the event.
Here's a look at the leaderboard following Friday's second round at Colonial Country Club:
Na has been efficient and opportunistic through two rounds, hitting two bogeys to go along with 12 birdies. The key to his success, as noted by the PGA Tour on Twitter in a highlight video, has been converting long-distance putts:
Even though Na has just one career PGA Tour win, he's been flirting with success often in 2015. The South Korean star has five top-10 finishes in 16 events prior to the Crowne Plaza Invitational, including a sixth-place showing at The Players Championship two weeks ago.
That performance may have been a turning point for Na, who infamously fired a final-round 76 at the 2012 Players Championship.
Speaking to ESPN's Jason Sobel during this year's event at TPC Sawgrass, Na was very open about battling a case of the yips:
"I didn't use that word, yips, but I told everyone that I couldn't take the club back. I mean, I was pretty honest. I wasn't trying to cover anything up. ... A lot of the guys, when you have that, they fall off the planet. They play poorly and nobody really sees and hears about it. But the weird case was I was playing one of my best golf and I couldn't take the club back. And the whole world saw me do it, so, believe me, I hear enough about it.
"
While this year's Players Championship didn't provide Na a chance to fully exorcise his demons, it looks like a crucial step on his journey.
One player who will be looking to exorcise some demons after Friday is Jordan Spieth. The 2015 Masters champion was in control of his game with an opening-round 64, but he had little go right in the second round with a three-over 73 to fall out of contention at three under par.
Spieth's struggles really came out of nowhere. He started on the back nine and went two under through 12 holes without a bogey. His 13th hole (No. 4) was when the fall began with a bogey on the par three, and it was followed with a triple-bogey on the next hole.
After the round, via PGATour.com's Mike McAllister, Spieth didn't seem to have an answer other than noting it was an out-of-character showing:
Here are the last three shots Spieth took on the fifth hole in which he wound up firing a seven, via the PGA Tour on Twitter:
Since his win at Augusta, Spieth has been erratic. He has had brilliant individual rounds, like the 64 on Thursday here and a 62 in the second round at the RBC Heritage, but is on his way to finishing outside the top 10 for a fourth straight event.
Spieth certainly has a bright future in the sport and isn't at a point where it's time to start worrying about his game. Friday was just a reminder how much work the 21-year-old still has to do before reaching his full potential.
While the youthful Spieth was having a round to forget, 52-year-old Vijay Singh was busy putting together another solid round and is five under par. The 2000 Masters champion hasn't had much to brag about in the twilight of his career, but it's nice to be reminded he's still capable of doing good things.
According to McAllister, Singh's back-to-back rounds in the 60s doubles his total from the previous 21 rounds he's played:
Singh's recent history, which includes five finishes outside the top 50 and one missed cut, suggests he isn't likely to keep up this pace. Yet the wily veteran has shown there are still a few tricks up his sleeve on a given day.
For now, Na becomes the focal point heading into Saturday. This is his event to lose, and it's hard not to root for him after all he's endured. It's taken a lot of hard work for him to reach this point, so don't expect him to take it for granted.
