4 Things on Thomas Tuchel's Borussia Dortmund To-Do List

Stefan BienkowskiMay 21, 2015

The Bundesliga will say goodbye to Jurgen Klopp this weekend when Werder Bremen arrive at the Westfalenstadion looking to cause one final upset in front of the Yellow Wall before the league disbands for the summer.

When it returns, Borussia Dortmund will have a new man in the dugout: Thomas Tuchel, who will be setting the formations, calling the shots and ultimately leading the former German champions in their new campaign.

Yet before all that is a whole summer of business that the former Mainz manager will have to work through before a ball is even kicked.

Here are the top-four priorities on Tuchel's to-do list.

Prepare for the Europa League

1 of 4

With Dortmund's place in the DFB-Pokal Cup final secured and just a draw needed this weekend to confirm a Bundesliga spot, it's essentially a given that Tuchel's side will be playing Europa League football next season.

Although fans will be delighted with the prospect of European football after the summer, such a competition will undoubtedly test Tuchel and the manner in which he can rotate his squad between the three tournaments.

Although the animosity toward the second-tier continental competition in Germany is nothing like that in England, Tuchel will have to make sure it doesn't get in the way of their domestic ambitions.

Get Mats Hummels Back to the Top of His Game

2 of 4

As we now know through German magazine Kicker (via ESPN), Mats Hummels has confirmed that he has rejected any possible move to Manchester United this summer and will play for Dortmund next season.

Although Tuchel will have hoped to keep the German international, now that he has nailed his colours to the board, the incoming manager can at last build a new-look back line around him.

For this to work, Tuchel will need to ensure he gets the best out of a central defender who led Klopp's side to two Bundesliga titles.

Dortmund have a world-class defender. It's now up to Tuchel to get the best out of him.

Heal Nuri Sahin's Injuries...for Good!

3 of 4

According to Transfermarkt, Nuri Sahin has missed 49 games since rejoining Dortmund in January of 2013.

To put such a number of games in context, most Champions League clubs tend to play around 50 games across all competitions from one season to the next. To add to that, Sahin has always proven himself whenever fit as a vital cog in Klopp's side, despite the amount of times he has to start all over again through injury.

Should Tuchel hope to get the best out him, or perhaps even more, Sahin will have to find a way to get over this injury-ridden phase in his career.

Get Jeremy Dudziak in the First Team

4 of 4

One of the biggest issues Tuchel will have to deal with when he takes over this summer is whether or not Marcel Schmelzer is good enough to continue being the club's first-choice left-back.

If not, Tuchel may well decide to dive into the transfer window, but should he choose to spend his cash elsewhere, there is always the option of promoting young Jeremy Dudziak from the youth team.

The 19-year-old is an immensely talented full-back and probably deserves more than the handful of appearances he's picked up under Klopp this season. Should Tuchel decide to replace Schmelzer, he may well have a ready-made alternative in his reserve team.
