NBA Draft Order 2015: Fresh Mock Draft After Lottery Results

Mike ChiariMay 20, 2015

Following an NBA draft lottery that left Los Angeles Lakers fans thrilled and New York Knicks fans disappointed, the full order of selection for June's draft has been determined.

The Minnesota Timberwolves will pick first after posting the league's worst record, and they will be followed by the Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Knicks and Orlando Magic to round out the top five. All of those teams could come away with potential franchise-changing players, although the first and second picks seem almost automatic.

Now that every team knows where it will be selecting when the draft commences, here is a full rundown of the entire first-round order, along with a mock draft projecting where the best prospects in the class will land.

Analyzing Potential Top Selections

Karl-Anthony Towns

With both the Knicks and the Lakers in the running for the No. 1 overall pick, plenty of conspiracy theorists figured the T-Wolves were destined to fall. Despite that, Minnesota was "rewarded" for having the NBA's worst record in 2014-15, as it will have its pick of the litter with the top selection in the draft.

That is an exciting prospect for Timberwolves fans, as they already have a young, talented team anchored by Andrew Wiggins and Ricky Rubio. They could use an interior presence, though, which makes it fairly obvious that either Kentucky's Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor out of Duke will be the pick.

Most seem to favor Towns since he is a more complete player, but ESPN's Ryen Russillo points out that rumors suggest Minnesota might prefer Okafor:

With that said, it is easy to envision the Timberwolves settling on Towns by the time the draft rolls around since he offers many things that Okafor simply doesn't.

For starters, Towns is a far superior defensive player, which is significant since Minnesota struggled mightily in that regard last season, according to NBA.com's David Aldridge:

In addition to that, Towns would give the T-Wolves more flexibility than Okafor late in games since he is much better from the free-throw line as well, per ESPN.com's Chad Ford:

It is also important to consider that Minnesota already has center Nikola Pekovic locked up in a long-term contract. Perhaps he and Okafor would be able to play together, but Towns seems like a far more natural fit.

Regardless of which big man the Timberwolves take, they are undoubtedly moving in the right direction toward playoff contention.

Seeing as Towns has many of the same qualities that fellow former Kentucky standout and current New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis possesses, though, Minnesota would be wise to invest in his impressive skill set.

Jahlil Okafor

Assuming the Timberwolves decide to pick Towns, the Lakers will have an extremely rewarding consolation prize on their hands in the form of Okafor.

He may not be Shaquille O'Neal, but there is little doubt that the reigning national champion will be L.A.'s best interior presence since Shaq was dealt to the Miami Heat. Okafor has a wide array of post moves that made him nearly unguardable at times in college, and they should help him make an immediate impact in the NBA as well.

The Lakers had a miserable season, but they have some good pieces in place. Veteran guard Kobe Bryant is chief among them, as is forward Julius Randle, who missed nearly the entire 2014-15 campaign due to injury. Provided Los Angeles adds Okafor to the mix, Lakers legend Magic Johnson is excited about what the future holds for the franchise:

While most players would love to be selected first, Okafor is taking a different approach entering the draft. He isn't placing much stock in when he comes off the board, as he is more concerned about where he ends up, according to SI.com.

"I don't know that I should go No. 1," Okafor said. "I don't care. I just want to go to the right environment for me and the right team. I think the hype about No. 1 is more for the fans."

That comment suggests that Okafor won't be disappointed if the Timberwolves don't take him. That is good news for the Lakers since they need a player who will be ready and willing to contribute from day one.

Even though Okafor seems like an obvious pick at No. 2 if Towns is gone, Ford suggests that L.A. could take a long, hard look at Ohio State guard D'Angelo Russell:

Although Russell is a great talent, Okafor simply seems like a better fit. The Lakers are no strangers to winning with a potent inside-outside combination, and they could have that with Okafor and Bryant.

Due to that fact, it is tough to envision them passing on Okafor if he is available when they are on the clock.

Emmanuel Mudiay

Perhaps the most interesting pick in the lottery is at No. 4, which is where the Knicks will select. They missed out on both Towns and Okafor, and it is likely that the Philadelphia 76ers will go with either Russell or Emmanuel Mudiay at No. 3, so New York may have to settle for what's left.

While it isn't an ideal situation by any means for a Knicks team that waited all year for a high pick, ESPN.com's Andy Katz believes they are still in an advantageous position since they can end up with a potentially elite point guard:

Mudiay seems to be the likeliest candidate, but Ford feels as though New York could also take a long look at Duke forward Justise Winslow or perhaps even trade out of No. 4:

Simply put, the Knicks need to surround Carmelo Anthony with more talent. They may be able to do that in free agency to some degree, but they also must hit a home run with their first-round pick in order to ensure long-term success.

That would have been much easier had they ended up with No. 1 or No. 2 since Towns and Okafor have all the makings of surefire stars, but there is no reason why Mudiay can't be great as well.

There are definitely some question marks surrounding him since he played in China rather than college last season, but he was highly sought after coming out of high school, and he can seemingly do it all from the point guard position.

Landing a true floor general is something that would speed up the rebuilding process in New York significantly, so look for the Knicks to roll the dice on Mudiay in hopes that he can fill that role.
