Calling True or False on 4 Recent AC Milan Transfer Rumours
Milan vice president Adriano Galliani has already made a promise: there will be transfers, and lots of them.
It's not unusual for Milan to make promises they can't keep, however. Remember, this is the club that signed defender Thiago Silva to a new contract and sold him weeks later.
But this time it's a bit different. If president Silvio Berlusconi and right-hand man Galliani want to keep their grip on Milan, they have to find the funds and deliver something.
"There will be a big transfer campaign, absolutely," Galliani told the press, per Football Italia. "When you have the prestige that Milan does, it’s easy to start again."
Over the course of the past season, several dozen names have been linked with the Rossoneri. Most of them are red herrings. A select few actually make sense.
Here are five of the biggest rumours that either passed or failed our smell test.
Ciro Immobile
1 of 4
Ciro Immobile has long stuck out as a possible signing for Milan this summer. He has not settled into life at Borussia Dortmund, and reports of a return to Italy surfaced as early as March from Sky (h/t Football Italia).
Tuttosport added to those rumours on Wednesday, suggesting that the German club would even accept a loan deal (h/t Football Italia).
If the move goes forward, Immobile would have the opportunity to play with former Torino team-mate Alessio Cerci once more. The pair were one of Serie A's best attacking partnerships last season. There is just too much sense in this move for it to be false news.
Verdit: True
Kevin-Prince Boateng
2 of 4
Kevin-Prince Boateng is most certainly done with Schalke. The Bundesliga side suspended Boateng for the rest of the season after a defeat to Cologne put Schalke in danger of missing European competition.
First, interest seemed to come from Major League Soccer, according to Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t the MLS website). But he is leaving the door open for a return to Milan.
"I'm just focusing on my holidays now and then we'll see what happens," he told Italia 1 (h/t Corriere dello Sport and via ESPN FC). "I love living in Milan and my girlfriend lives there, and you can never say never in football."
There is nothing, however, to suggest a return for the 26-year-old.
Boateng left Italy after suffering racist abuse, and Schalke's chief financial officer, Peter Peters, confirmed that was the reason for the player's departure from the peninsula, as noted in SportBildPlus (h/t ESPN FC).
Verdict: False
Alex Song
3 of 4
Milan badly need midfielders, and Alex Song has emerged as an option.
Song spent the past season at West Ham United, on loan from Barcelona, but he has no intention of returning to the Catalan club, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
Inter first pursued him, according to the Daily Mail, but their attention has seemingly turned to Manchester City's Yaya Toure, per PA Sport (h/t ESPN FC).
Song could instead join Milan, who are set to lose their own holding midfielder Nigel de Jong on a Bosman transfer—De Jong's contract with Milan expires next month. Song could come in and restore some strength to the middle of the pitch.
There is the potential for another loan deal here, and Milan will take those whenever they can.
Verdict: True
Carlos Bacca
4 of 4
Colombian striker Carlos Bacca has quietly scored 26 goals for Sevilla this season, leading them once again to a Europa League final.
But he is hesitant to move away from Spain. "All I am thinking about is winning the Europa League," Bacca said, per ESPN FC. "I'm happy here and I'm going to be happy here for a long time to come."
His coach Unai Emery has also been a target for Milan. Italian daily La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Sport) put out the idea of Emery and Bacca leaving for Milan together. It's likely either a package deal or none at all.
Verdict: False
