Who's Hot, Who's Not on the PGA Tour Heading into Colonial

Ben AlberstadtMay 18, 2015

As the PGA Tour heads to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, 124 of the PGA Tour's best are preparing to put a peg in the ground.

No golfer in the game is hotter than Rory McIlroy right now; however, he's playing the European Tour's BMW PGA Championship this week, so he doesn't make this list.

Fear not, however. There are plenty of en fuego (on fire) golfers who'll be playing Marvin Leonard's course this week. Of course, there are players in the field for whom the mercury isn't exactly rising.

Who are a few of the hot/cold golfers in the field this week?

Click through to find out.

Hot: Robert Streb

1 of 6

Oklahoma native Robert Streb followed a tie for 30th at The Players Championship with a tie for fourth at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Streb seized the first-round lead with a seven-under 65 and broke par in his next three rounds (although that still placed him nine strokes behind the rampaging McIlroy).

For the week at Quail Hollow, Streb was precise with his approaches to the North Carolina course's greens, hitting 73.6 percent in regulation. His flatstick is hot as well: Streb picked up 2.257 strokes on the field thanks to his work with it.

He's also dominating the par fives, playing the three-shotters in 14 under over his last two tournaments.

Not: Adam Scott

2 of 6

Adam Scott tied for 38th at The Players Championship after a final-round 75 dropped him down the leaderboard.

The Australian came to Quail Hollow looking to rebound. Unfortunately, despite a late rally, Scott missed the cut by a stroke.

His putting has been historically awful this year, as he's bounced back and forth between long and conventional-length putters.

At the Players, he lost 1.320 strokes to the field with the putter and .651 strokes to the field at Quail Hollow. He'll need to get the putter working if he wants to move from not to hot.

Hot: Jordan Spieth

3 of 6

Even though Jordan Spieth missed the cut at the Players, he still earns a hot designation this week.

Between the Valspar Championship and the Masters, Spieth won twice and finished second twice. He followed these performances with a tie for 11th at the RBC Heritage and playing well at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play.

Aside from McIlroy, Spieth has been the hottest golfer in the world over the past 2.5 months. He finished tied for 14th at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial last year.

Not: Brandt Snedeker

4 of 6

Brandt Snedeker missed the cut at the Masters and hasn't been playing much better since. He didn't make it out of the group stage of the WGC-Cadillac Match Play and missed the cut at The Players Championship, thanks to a second-round 78.

The Vanderbilt alum has struggled with his accuracy into greens recently. He hit just 52.7 percent of greens in regulation at TPC Sawgrass.

He has only one top-15 finish in his last eight starts.

Hot: Patrick Rodgers

5 of 6

Patrick Rodgers played 70 quality holes at the Wells Fargo Championship before going three over par for his final two holes. Still, the tie-for-second finish at a long, difficult tract was impressive.

The Stanford alum notched his best finish of his six starts as a sponsor's exemption on the PGA Tour this season and has moved closer to securing temporary status on the PGA Tour.

With a strong showing at this week's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, Rodgers should be able to wrap up temporary status, which would allow him to accept an unlimited amount of sponsors exemptions this year.

Not: Jason Dufner

6 of 6

Jason Dufner has just one top-10 finish this season. He's currently 105th in the FedEx Cup standings.

Dufner hasn't finished inside the top 20 in his last seven starts and missed the cut at The Players Championship his last time out.

He's fallen from ninth in the Official World Golf Ranking in 2013 to 67th, where he sits presently. What's the culprit? Largely putting. Dufner is 165th on tour in strokes gained: putting. He's also 121st on tour in birdies this season.
