The Most Entitled Fanbases in Sports

Nick DimengoMay 19, 2015

It's every fan's right to root to the death for their team, standing by their favorite franchises through thick and thin, never betraying that team under any circumstance.

Unfortunately, a few fanbases will take that responsibility a bit too far, pushing their devotion to an annoyingly unacceptable point and making other fans completely hate them for doing so.

When a fanbase reaches the point of entitlement, that's the moment they go from tolerable to downright irritating, apparently believing that, for some reason, they deserve more than they have, and leaving other fans against them. These are the supporters who have seemingly reached that level on at least one occasion.

New York Knicks Fans

1 of 12

I totally get it, New York Knicks fans. I mean, your team is one of the most historic in the history of the NBA, with a track record that includes great players and coaches like Walt Frazier, Willis Reed and Patrick Ewing.

But, let's face it, you haven't been to an NBA Finals since the lockout-shortened 1999 season—where, as an No. 8 seed, you lost to the San Antonio Spurs—and haven't actually hoisted the Larry O'Brien Trophy since the 1973 season.

Sure, you play in the "World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden, and have the spotlight on you because of the whole New York shtick, but to think that a team with an aging/hobbled superstar—Carmelo Anthony—and a bunch of role players would compete for a chance at a title was unrealistic, so stop humiliating yourselves by chanting A-list actors' names during games to pass time.

Philadelphia Sports Fans

2 of 12

It might be known as the City of Brotherly Love, but Philadelphia has proven to be anything but when it comes to cheering for their sports teams.

In addition to the famous incident in which Eagles fans booed and then threw snowballs at a replica Santa Claus during a game in 1968, there have been countless moments of debauchery that have stained the reputation of Philly fans.

After starving for a major championship for 25 years prior to the Phillies winning a World Series in 2008, the city's fans still carry past heartbreak and unfiltered attitude with them anywhere they go, typically resulting in a round of fisticuffs anytime someone disagrees with their opinion.

Crude, crass and unapologetic about it all, Philly fans are deeply passionate about their teams, but they happen to think they always deserve to be mentioned with some other great franchises, which just isn't the case.

Chicago Cubs Fans

3 of 12

In case you've forgotten, the Chicago Cubs haven't reached a World Series since 1945 and haven't won the thing since 1908—allegedly—so you would think a little humility would come with that frustration, right?

Wrong.

While the Cubbies continue to add depressing moments to their history, the fans remain adamant that they're the best baseball team in town, belittling those who root for the South Side team, the Chicago White Sox.

Lest we forget, however, that the Sox are the ones who have the most recent World Series title, winning it all in 2005—though, some Chicagoans are quick to forget that ever actually happened since it wasn't the Cubs who accomplished the feat.

Unaffected by such success, though, Cubs fans remain self-entitled because of their history, even turning on their fellow supporters when things don't go their way—like they did during the Steve Bartman incident in 2003.

Montreal Canadiens Fans

4 of 12

One of the Original Six franchises in the NHL, Montreal Canadiens fans have had plenty to cheer about in their storied history, hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup a record 23 times—which is 10 more times than the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are second on the list.

Unfortunately, Habs fans haven't seen their team even reach a Cup Final since 1993, which happened to be the year of their last title.

With little postseason success over the past two decades, one would think that fans would be a bit more silent when it came to comparing themselves to other great franchises. Yet, Canadiens fans continue to prove that they hold themselves in the highest regard, failing to recognize that they aren't quite championship-caliber quite yet.

I mean, really, who riots after a second-round playoff series win—as fans did in 2010?

Dallas Cowboys Fans

5 of 12

Prior to the 2014 NFL season, the Dallas Cowboys had, remarkably, gone 146-142 since the 1996 season, nearly redefining what it means to be an average football team.

Still, one wouldn't know it anytime they saw a Cowboys fan, who constantly talks about the team's great history, deep pockets to spend and invincibility that comes with being labeled as "America's Team."

With just two playoff wins since the team's last Super Bowl appearance and win in 1996, the Boys and their fans probably shouldn't be so confident. But, as the saying goes, "everything is bigger in Texas," and the Cowboys fans' egos happen to echo that sentiment.

Duke Blue Devils Men's Hoops Fans

6 of 12

When a fanbase complains about other people hating them because they're too good, you know they're a little bit too full of themselves.

Of course, that's not to disagree with the men's basketball fans of the Duke Blue Devils, who remind everyone that they are the "classiest" of hoops fans by trying to humiliate opposing teams and fans with chants that remind everyone about how smart they are because they go to Duke.

With the winningest men's college hoops coach in D-I history, Mike Krzyzewski, as well as the title as the reigning NCAA champs, Dukies are about as self-entitled as any fans on this list—and they won't stop until the team's winning does.

They are one of the most passionate and educated fanbases in all of sports, but that doesn't mean they aren't annoying as all hell.

Ohio State Buckeyes Football Fans

7 of 12

Ah, yes, the scarlet and gray of the Ohio State University.

As a Buckeyes fan myself, I can tell you that I try to keep it tame anytime I can but, as one of the premier programs in college football history, it can be a little bit difficult.

Add in this year's remarkable run at the school's eighth national title—which, lest I remind you, was done with its third-string quarterback—and Bucknuts have bragging rights that won't get old until another team knocks them off of the national championship pedestal.

With loads of money pumped into the football program each year, a fanbase that's both wild and, yes, passionately obnoxious, and the expectation as favorites, per OddsShark.com, to make a run toward another College Football Playoff spot in 2016, Buckeyes fans feel as if it's their time to shut every SEC fan up by putting together a string of remarkable seasons.

Los Angeles Lakers Fans

8 of 12

Maybe it's the lights, the glam and the whole Showtime persona, but there aren't too many people who enjoy interacting with Los Angeles Lakers fans.

That's not to say that these purple and gold supporters aren't passionate or knowledgeable, but it means that, because of the bevy of celebrities who move to Hollywood and wear Lakers gear, other teams' fans are skeptical as to who truly is a diehard.

Thanks to the team's 16 championships and history with names like Wilt, Magic, Shaq and Kobe, fans are quick to dismiss any other organization as being the best, and are legitimately stunned when a superstar chooses another team over the Lakers during free agency.

Playing in the second-largest media market in the U.S. and having deep pockets thanks to a TV deal, the Lakers and their fans carry themselves as if they're the best thing since sliced bread—even if they have an injured superstar in Kobe Bryant who has been surrounded with B-level talent the past couple of years.

Kentucky Wildcats Men's Hoops Fans

9 of 12

As much as it killed me to add the Ohio State Buckeyes football fans to this list, it's almost depressing to put the Kentucky Wildcats men's hoops team fans on here—seeing as how UK is my alma mater.

Still, in my unbiased opinion, there's no doubt in my mind that Big Blue Nation is about as self-entitled as any fanbase in the nation.

First off, the team has a head coach in John Calipari who has so much swagger that he makes the quartet (warning: video contains profanity) of T.I., Jay Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne seem like posers, as Cal walks around knowing that he's the undisputed champion at motivating his blue-chip players every season.

Second, UK has the most wins of any college program in history, as well as the second-most titles in NCAA history with eight, so of course there's going to be a little bit of boasting.

Lastly, when a team annually cycles through the high school All-Americans and produces NBA draft picks as if it's no big deal, who wouldn't get a little bit of a big ego?

With four Final Four appearances in Cal's six seasons in Lexington, Kentucky fans have had incredible moments to celebrate—and they'll remind you of every single one of them.

New York Yankees Fans

10 of 12

When it comes to the New York Yankees, one either loves them or absolutely despises them. There is never an in-between when it comes to the Damn Yankees.

Even without the most World Series titles of any MLB club, 27, or the history of names like Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle and Jeter, the Yanks are still hated because of the passed-down exceptionalism that their fans grow up believing.

With deep pockets to overpay free agents to compile a team of All-Stars year after year, New York fans are disappointed with anything less than a World Series title.

Normally, that would be a good thing, with expectations staying sky-high. But, in the Bronx, it has become so obnoxious that the egos of every Yanks fans has exponentially grown to outrageous proportions.

Alabama Crimson Tide Football Fans

11 of 12

With one of the most dominant sports programs of the past decade, Alabama Crimson Tide football fans have had plenty to brag about in recent years.

Led by future Hall of Fame head coach Nick Saban, the Tide have captured three national titles in Saban's eight seasons in T-Town, producing NFL draft picks as often as the aforementioned Kentucky Wildcats have in men's college hoops.

In addition to bringing in tons of money for the university each season, Tide fans can take solace in the fact that their team's history is about as epic as any on the college gridiron, with names like Bear Bryant that helped shape the sport.

Add in the obnoxiousness of their "Roll Tide" cheer—which is said whenever they want to—and the arrogance and anger that they put on display when they, God forbid, lose a big game, and Bama fans have the ego of the high school quarterback who knows he'll be voted prom king before voting even begins.

Boston Sports Fans

12 of 12

Am I jealous of Boston sports fans? I'll rarely admit to it, but, sure, who wouldn't be envious of a city winning nine championships over the four major sports since the year 2000?

Still, that doesn't mean that those who call Beantown home are invincible to doing something wrong.

The reason Boston fans land No. 1 on this list is because they've seemed to have forgotten what made them the lovable losers in the first place—their underdog personas.

With a 15-year dynasty in the NFL with the Patriots, three World Series wins by their Red Sox and a title apiece by the Celtics and Bruins in the past 15 years, New Englanders have become the most irritating and self-righteous sports fans in the country, believing that they're still the little town to big bad New York City.

That's not the case, though, as the Boston teams have shown to put themselves above the rules and the fans to pout when things don't go their way.
