Dana White, Not a F'n Fan of The A Team?
Recently the president of the UFC expressed his opinion about Quinton "Rampage" Jackson taking a part in a movie remake of a former TV classic, The A Team.
My children, husband, and I use to watch the show religiously. You could say we were hooked on the series, and that would be an accurate assessment.
The A Team had a clever premise of a bunch of former soldiers reuniting with their fearless leader and using their individual and unique talents to defeat the bad guys.
George Peppard was the leader, there was a handsome guy who was a real personable fellow and ladies man, a psych-freak who was wily and crazy enough to take on just about anything (though if I recall, he was afraid to fly), and a huge tough guy who was black and proud of it.
This was BA Baracus, who walked around looking completely intimidating, unbeatable, frequently muttering the famous catch phrase, "I pity the fool..."
Everyone loved Mr. T who portrayed BA, who actually was T's virtual "alter ego" in real life.
Dana White is upset and outraged by that fact that this movie will prevent Rampage from being able to fight at UFC 107 against Rashad Evans.
For those living in a cave, Rampage and "Sugar" Rashad Evans are the two coaches on the soon-to-debut UFC show on Spike TV known as TUF, being No. 10 in the series.
Number 10 will be made up of sixteen of the toughest Heavyweight candidates that have yet to be seen on the series.
The roster includes former professional football players, which has everyone salivating at the thought, but primarily, there is Kevin Ferguson who is none other than the YouTube phenomenon "Kimbo Slice."
An entire fight organization, the Elite XC, once revolved entirely around Kimbo's notoriety and popularity with a young crowd of fight fanatics.
Unfortunately, being typical of all of MMA, which is an entirely unpredictable and unscripted sport (unlike the younger crowd's equally popular "sport," the WWE), Kimbo proved to be beatable after all.
With Kimbo's loss, the organization quickly collapsed.
The demise of the EXC did nothing to diminish Slice's legion of fans, however, and White, (who once alleged that "even the Lightweight champion of the UFC, BJ Penn, could whip Kimbo"), has stood by the statement that Mr. Ferguson would have to go through being a contestant on TUF to fight his way into the UFC.
As all fans of TUF are aware, at the end of the series and after the much anticipated finale where the winner of $100, 000 and a UFC contract will be determined, the two coaches will face off to see who is the toughest bad-ass.
White says that "F'n fighters should not do F'n movies until after they have F'n retired!"
In his estimation they are stars on TV and do not need to be taking time from their UFC obligation to film movies. At least not in this boss's opinion.
"What is Quinton thinking?" asked White, "That Rashad and his mother are sitting at home watching the "Love Boat" and Rashad wants to play Isaac?"
Well, since Rashad has a lovely wife and baby, I don't see him watching TV with his Mother under ordinary circumstances, so I doubt that hypothesis entirely, although Rashad is charming and handsome enough to play the role.
The Love Boat also had a large following back in the day.
Basically, once again, Dana wants whats good for Dana.
He also theorized that the film will not make Rampage "as F'n much money as the fight would."
How optimistic of White. He must think the "black-on-black crime" that Rampage threatened Rashad with, will be quite a big draw for the MMA PPV audience, even during these hard economic times.
My family will doubtlessly hope to relive their childhood and those better, more innocent days by purchasing tickets and taking their families to see a classic that they once loved.
If I can tear myself out of my comfort zone, I would enjoy seeing Rampage do his own take-off on the Mr. T part of BA Baracus. Page is a very charismatic man and I love his sense of humor.
Rampage has been in other action movies, and I hear he was very good. It is not much of a stretch for him to portray an intimidating fighter, as that is exactly who he is.
Only time will tell the outcome of what Dana considers one of his worst nightmares.
Personally, I hope the remake is a blockbuster.
Having one of my favorite MMA fighters succeed outside of the octagon may bring curious "first timers" to the UFC to see their favorite new movie star fight for real.
Who knows, this may be a blessing in disguise.
It wouldn't exactly be the first time Dana took a lemon and ended up making lemonade with it, now, would it?
