NASCAR Xfinity Series at Iowa 2015 Results: Winner, Standings and Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldMay 17, 2015

The future seems bright for 22-year-old Chris Buescher, who drove to Victory Lane in the NASCAR Xfinity Series' 3M 250 at Iowa Speedway on Sunday and led 94 laps.

Buescher made a late move to pass reigning Xfinity Series champion Chase Elliott, a development driver for Hendrick Motorsports who will take over Jeff Gordon's No. 24 car on the Sprint Cup circuit once Gordon retires following this season.

Below are the standings for the 3M 250's top finishers, courtesy of NASCAR.com:

Iowa Speedway captured footage of Buescher's celebration:

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. reached out to congratulate Buescher afterward:

A bad break came for Elliott right at the end in the form of a late caution—the ninth of the race—which forced extra action and a green-white-checkered finish on the final few laps. It erased the considerable lead Elliott built and made for an intense conclusion, and the teenager couldn't fend off Buescher.

Elliott led a race-best 114 laps, as it was pretty cut and dry that he and Buescher would be the only ones in it to win it at the end. The 19-year-old sensation had passed Buescher with 30 laps remaining and looked well on his way to winning before the fateful yellow flag was waived.

Roush Fenway Racing highlighted just how strong Buescher's career performance was:

The only driver who led more than a lap other than Elliott and Buescher was Daniel Suarez, who was out in front for 48 laps.

USA Today's Chad Leistikow pointed out how unprecedented it was for Suarez to be ahead for so long:

Unfortunately for Suarez, he wasn't able to maintain the lead he built early, and he faded late when it mattered most. Suarez explained his plight on Twitter once the race concluded and he was in 18th place, two laps behind the lead:

Darrell Wallace Jr. slipped out of the top five and wasn't too pleased, lamenting the late caution, per Leistikow:

Cautions are part of racing and can drive crews crazy with the timing and such. Only one driver is ultimately pleased by the end of the day, so Buescher should still reflect on his second Xfinity Series victory with fondness.

Fending off the likes of Elliott, racing so well throughout the day and finishing in style are all factors that have to give Buescher plenty of confidence to carry forward. He now leads the championship standings.

Next up on the Xfinity Series schedule is the Hisense 300 on Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Kyle Larson won the race last year, and a great cast of young talent makes the odds shorter of another prodigious driver being crowned as champion once again.
