UFC Fight Night 66 Results: 5 Fights for Frankie Edgar
Frankie Edgar looked determined to cement his place within the featherweight division as he dominated Urijah Faber for 25 minutes Saturday at UFC Fight Night 66. By the end of their main event clash in Manila, it was clear that he is on the short list of men deserving a shot at the 145-pound title.
Unfortunately, with Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor booked for UFC 189 in July, that outcome is still up in the air. With that in mind, here are fight suggestions for Edgar after his most recent victory.
Jose Aldo
1 of 5
Even though Edgar is ranked as the No. 2 featherweight in the official UFC Top 15, he’s done enough to deserve another shot at the belt. If Aldo gets by Conor McGregor at UFC 189, he may find himself facing off against the New Jersey native for the second time.
This version of Edgar has fought at a relentless pace to overwhelm and control his opponents. It would be interesting to see if this game plan would help create a different result than what occurred at UFC 156.
Conor McGregor
2 of 5
McGregor is another man who may stand across from Edgar in the near future. The Irish fighter has yet to face a competitor with the takedown abilities that Edgar brings into the cage. If McGregor walks out of Las Vegas with the title around his waist, he will have to address questions as to how or if he would handle such an attack.
In a recent MMA Fighting piece by David St. Martin, Edgar praised McGregor but still sees “unknowns” in his game. A fight between the two seems imminent.
Chad Mendes
3 of 5
Chad Mendes remains the top-ranked featherweight contender, even though Aldo has beaten him twice. Still, to earn a shot at the current champion, competitors will have to find a way to defeat the highly-talented fighter. Edgar's ability to strike effectively and wrestle would be interesting aspects to this fight. His recent smashing of Ricardo Lamas keeps him relevant within the division, but he’s far away from getting a third shot at the belt. Fighting Edgar would shorten his time on the outside, while a win for Edgar would make it clear that he is the top contender in the division.
Max Holloway
4 of 5
Max Holloway surprised a lot of people with his one-sided defeat of Cub Swanson at UFC on Fox 15. The Hawaii native is now in the No. 5 position within the division. At 23 years old, Holloway is one of the hottest young prospects around. He’s already faced McGregor and lost back in 2013, but he’s won six straight fights since that date. One of the big questions would be whether or not Edgar would be able to handle Holloway's range and movement, which were both key parts to Holloway's dominating win over Swanson.
T.J. Dillashaw
5 of 5
Edgar built his legacy by fighting bigger men within the lightweight division. Since moving down to featherweight, his speed has transitioned nicely and further complements his added strength.
In a piece by Anton Tabuena of Bloody Elbow, Edgar mentioned that a drop to bantamweight is “doable," but he’d rather remain at featherweight to earn that belt. However, that comment causes one to ponder how The Answer would perform against the 135-pound kingpin, T.J. Dillashaw. While that fight may not occur, it is still a great fantasy matchup.
