Rajasthan Royals Beat Kolkata Knight Riders, Make Play-Offs
3 of 4
Rajasthan Royals (199/6) defeat Kolkata Knight Riders (190/9) by nine runs.
Shane Watson scored a century and Chris Morris bowled several vital overs as Rajasthan Royals qualified for the play-offs with a win over Kolkata Knight Riders.
Kolkata decided to rest Sunil Narine to avoid a potential play-off ban for the West Indies star, and the decision backfired tremendously, as Warner found much success against the remaining bowlers.
Rajasthan knew they were in dire need of a big total to have a strong shot of qualifying for the play-offs, and from the very first over, they attacked Kolkata's group of bowlers with fury. Ajinkya Rahane and Watson piled on the runs early, with the former scoring 37 from 22 and the latter never leaving the crease on his way to a spectacular 104.

Kolkata simply had no answer early, and while the bowlers managed to calm themselves down and limit the damage during the second part of the innings, Watson's fine knock meant Royals were on their way to a solid total.
Andre Russel bagged himself three wickets and gave up 32 runs, but two of his team-mates had economy rates in the double digits thanks to the fine work from Watson.
Still, ESPN Cricinfo's Freddie Wilde believed the total of 199 could have been a lot worse, and he liked Kolkata's chances of chasing it down:
I reckon that score is about par; the winner of this match will be the team that holds their nerve. #IPL #RRvKKR #RR #KKR

Kolkata's chase hit an early setback, however, as both Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa were caught early. The duo managed just 15 runs, putting a ton of pressure on the middle of the Kolkata order.
Andre Russell and Yusuf Pathan soon settled in and got a strong partnership going, as Rajasthan continued to bowl short and give up boundaries. With six overs left to be played, Knight Riders were hovering around the required run rate, and the chase looked like it could go down to the wire.

Morris took two quick wickets, including that of Russell, to gift momentum back to Rajasthan, and when Yusuf Pathan was caught in the 16th over, the match was all but over. The chase went absolutely nowhere in the final overs, and Rajasthan could start their play-off celebrations early.
Gambir was more than disappointed after the loss, although he gave Watson all the credit in the world, via ESPN Cricinfo:
"Obviously our destiny was in our hands, but we seem to have messed it up. Loit of credit to the Royals. 199 would be tough on any wicket, credit to Shane the way he batted. If a top order batsman batted through more often than not they'd win.
170-180 could have been an ideal total, we knew it would he high-scoring. The points table shows all sides are quality. It's one of the difficult leagues to play. We've played reasonably good cricket., but there are games we should have won. That's why we're here. It's going to be tough, but you have to take it on your chin and move on.
"
Rajasthan have now qualified for the play-offs and will find out where they will be seeded after the conclusion of Sunday's double header. Royal Challengers Bangalore will take on Delhi Daredevils, while Mumbai Indians go up against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Defending champions Kolkata can still qualify for the play-offs, but they will be dependent on the results from Sunday's matches.
Chennai Super Kings Top the Table
4 of 4
Chennai Super Kings (134/3) beat Kings XI Punjab (130/7) by seven wickets.
Chennai Super Kings were comfortable in their victory over bottom-of-the-table Kings XI Punjab on Saturday.
Kings XI kicked off the batting, but the difference in league position and quality between the two teams quickly became apparent.
Chennai's bowlers each performed their duties admirably with Suresh Raina the only one not to manage a wicket, though he only bowled a solitary over.
Ravichandran Ashwin was particularly impressive, as he conceded just 14 runs in four overs as well as throwing 14 dot balls.
Meanwhile, Kings XI's batsmen struggled to make an impact on the match.
Only Axar Patel (32) and Rishi Dhawan (25) managed to score more than 15 runs as Kings XI could only set a fairly meagre total of 130.

Kings XI hinted at a comeback as they rocked Chennai with two early wickets.
Brendon McCullum, on his last match for Chennai before joining New Zealand for their Test series with England, failed to go out in style as he was taken for just six.
Michael Hussey fell for just one in his first innings of the season, but Faf du Plessis (55), Suresh Raina (41) and MS Dhoni (25) patiently reeled in the total as Chennai made the match look incredibly routine.
Even Du Plessis' dismissal in the 14th over at the hands of Dhawan's driven yorker did little to upset Chennai's rhythm as the Super Kings won with three overs to spare.
