Mosquera-Perea averaged 6.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game last season for the Hoosiers, while Davis did not appear in a game in 2014-15 but averaged 2.4 points per game in 2013-14. Davis was hit by a car driven by teammate Emmitt Holt before the 2014-15 campaign started.
Mosquera-Perea's guardian Mark Adams commented on the news, noting that the player was "devastated" by the dismissal, per Jeff Rabjohns via Rivals.com:
"I really don't know right now what his next step will be. A lot of people already are reaching out. I hope he doesn't choose to go to another BCS school and goes to someplace a little smaller.
"
I hope he grows from it and learns from it. IU gave him all the opportunites and chances you could hope for. Hopefully he learns from it.
The team suspended Mosquera-Perea indefinitely last season for "operating while intoxicated and operating with a blood alcohol of .15 or greater," per ESPN's Dana O'Neil. What's more, Davis was recently cited for marijuana possession, and Mosquera-Perea was in his dorm room when it happened, per Zach Osterman of the Indianapolis Star.
O'Neil praised the difficult call for head coach Tom Crean:
Neither is the most important piece on the Hoosiers roster, but Mosquera-Perea was expected to be a critical piece for depth purposes. He is a solid rebounder and formidable rim protector on the defensive side of the ball, and Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports noted that depth is now a concern:
Osterman underscored exactly why depth is now a problem:
Fortunately for Indiana, Yogi Ferrell returned after flirting with an NBA decision. So did Troy Williams and James Blackmon Jr. Crean also added McDonald's All-American big man Thomas Bryant in his 2015 recruiting class that also included power forward Juwan Morgan, per 247Sports.
As Rothstein pointed out, Bryant will likely start from the first game. That is a lot of pressure on a freshman's shoulders, especially at a historically dominant basketball program like Indiana, but the talent level is certainly there.
He must find a way to replicate (or surpass) Mosquera-Perea's rebounding and block totals and serve as a contributing piece alongside Ferrell, Williams and Blackmon Jr. if the Hoosiers hope to compete with the likes of Maryland and Michigan State for a Big Ten title.
