Mumbai Indians kept their playoff dreams alive with a thrilling five-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mumbai’s effort with the bat was salvaged by a wonderful knock of 61 from Hardik Pandya. The 21-year-old played superbly at the back end of their innings alongside Kieron Pollard, and their partnership was crucial in the Indians reaching 171 for four from their 20 overs.

In response, Kolkata didn’t really get going. Yusuf Pathan played magnificently for his 52, but his late dismissal sapped the life out of the Knight Riders' charge, and they eventually finished up on 166 for seven.

Here’s how the action played out in this thrilling encounter and a look at the revised standings following Mumbai’s win.

Mumbai Keep Playoff Hopes Alive with Thrilling Win over Kolkata

3 of 3

Mumbai Indians (171/4) beat Kolkata Knight Riders (166/7) by five runs

Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir put the Mumbai Indians in to bat in this match, and some excellent bowling early on looked to vindicate his decision.

Both Lendl Simmons (14) and Parthiv Patel (21) struggled for rhythm in the opening exchanges of this one and were dismissed inside the opening six overs. When the dangerous Ambati Rayudu was out for just two in the seventh over, Mumbai were really toiling, with just 47 runs on the board and three wickets down.

Shakib Al-Hasan did the damage with the ball for Kolkata, taking the vital wickets of Patel and Rayudu. Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle paid tribute to his performance, as he bamboozled the Mumbai batsmen with his bowling variety:

"

No surprise that #KKR have gone for Shakib as soon as he became available. Among the most valuable players in the #PepsiIPL

— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) May 14, 2015"

Skipper Rohit Sharma was able to add some stability with 30 from 21 balls, but the Indians’ innings really only got going once Hardik Pandya came out to the crease to join Kieron Pollard.

They put on a superb unbeaten partnership of 92 from just 50 balls. Typically, it’s Pollard—who made a studious 33 from 38 balls—who goes hard at the ball, but this time, Pandya assumed the role of aggressor and did so with a real distinction.

He struck 61 from 31 balls, including eight fours and two sixes. As we can see here, courtesy of Mumbai’s official Twitter feed, Pandya accelerated wonderfully during his time at the crease:

"

This is how #ApunKaSuperstar Hardik Pandya stormed towards his maiden #IPL 50 - 0 1lb 1 1 1 1 4 0 2 1 1 1 4 4 4 4 1 1 1 6 0 nb 4 4 6.

His blistering knock hauled the Indians from a subpar total to a respectable 171 for four. But after deciding to bat second, Gambhir clearly felt as though this was a wicket that would improve as the game rumbled on.

Kolkata’s response got off to a solid start through their skipper and Robin Uthappa too. They put on 45 for the first wicket, and things seemed to be going well for the reigning champions. But they lost the destructive Uthappa for 25 in the sixth over, and just a couple of balls later, Manish Pandey was run out for one.

As we can see here, the Wankhede Stadium was fully behind their team at this juncture:

Gambhir remained well set, however, and he and Yusuf Pathan did well to steer Kolkata back on course. But after being handed one lifeline by Pandya—who dropped a sitter in the 11th over—the very next ball the Kolkata star was bowled by Jagadeesha Suchith.

The match was suddenly swinging Mumbai’s way. When Shakib (21) and the extremely dangerous Andre Russell (2) were dismissed, they were the massive favourites. However, Pathan was still at the crease and as such, Kolkata’s chances were still alive.

Suryakumar Yadav offered little support with a quick-fire 11, and going into the final over, Kolkata needed 12 runs to get over the line, with Pathan in superb shape on 52. But he fell off the first ball of the final over in what was a body blow for the Knight Riders' chances; eventually, they finished up five runs short of the Mumbai total.

With the playoffs looming, a win here will stand Mumbai in superb stead as we move towards the business end of the competition. The Indians held their nerve in what was such an important contest and now have a brilliant chance of making it into the final knockings off this illustrious tournament.
