IPL 2015: Top Run-Scorers, Averages, T20 Strike Rates After Mumbai vs. Kolkata
Mumbai Indians had to beat Kolkata Knight Riders if they were to stand any realistic chance of making it into the playoffs, and they did exactly that on Thursday at a packed Wankhede Stadium, securing a thrilling five-run win.
Hardik Pandya was the hero for the Indians, as his innings of 61 salvaged what was an otherwise poor effort with the bat from Mumbai. The 21-year-old helped haul his side to 171 for four, and despite a classy 52 in response from Yusuf Pathan, Kolkata could only get to within five runs of the Mumbai total.

Hardik Pandya Spares Mumbai’s Blushes
Mumbai Indians were in big trouble after the loss of four early wickets, but Hardik Pandya came out to the crease and played superbly, pushing his team towards a solid eventual total.
His unbeaten innings of 61 from 31 deliveries was crucial to an overall score of 171 for four. As we can see here, courtesy of the Indians’ Twitter account, the manner in which the 21-year-old accelerated his innings was especially enjoyable:
"This is how #ApunKaSuperstar Hardik Pandya stormed towards his maiden #IPL 50 - 0 1lb 1 1 1 1 4 0 2 1 1 1 4 4 4 4 1 1 1 6 0 nb 4 4 6.

To come in and play a knock of such composure was truly remarkable for a player so young. After all, Mumbai needed to win this match to keep their slender playoff hopes alive in this tournament, and it was Pandya’s innings which hauled the team up off of their haunches.
As noted here by Ayaz Memon, the youngster’s 61 transformed the feeling around the game:
"How splendid has Harit Pandya been? Has pulled Mumbai out of deep crisis into a potentially matchwinning position.

One of the most enamouring things about the Indian Premier League is how young players like Pandya get a chance to mix it up with some of the world’s best players. Displays like this one point to a bright future for the all-rounder and will surely force him into the frame for international starts further down the line.
