IPL 2015 Results: Scores, Points Table, Schedule, Live Stream Info and More

Royal Challengers Bangalore missed the chance to go second in the Indian Premier League table, as they suffered a shock 22-run loss to bottom side Kings XI Punjab in a rain-affected game.

Wriddhiman Saha got Kings XI off to a blistering start to their reduced innings of 10 overs, but regular wickets meant they had to settle for 106 for six from their 60 balls faced.

It turned out to be a decent score, as Bangalore's star-studded batting lineup struggled for timing and eventually fell well short of the target required on 84 for six.

Here’s a look at the updated standings after this result and a recap of how the action played out in this shortened contest in Mohali.

Punjab Dent Bangalore's Playoff Hopes in Shock Win

3 of 3

Kings XI Punjab (106/6) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (84/6) by 22 runs (10 overs per team)

For a long time, this match between Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore didn’t look as though it was going to go ahead.

The rain tumbled down in Mohali to delay the start time, and a particular problem with one area of the field caused issues for the umpires. As we can see here, courtesy of the tournament’s official Twitter account, there was plenty of discussion going on out in the middle:

"

But with the clock ticking, a pitch inspection was declared successful, and those spectators who had remained in situ were set to be treated to a 10-over game. They were also treated to a gem of an innings from Wriddhiman Saha.

After being put in to bat after losing the toss, the Punjab opener settled into his groove magnificently. He hammered 31 from just 12 balls to get his team off to a flying start, departing the field with Kings XI on 34 for one from just 2.1 overs.

As noted by Cricbuzz, it was a bowling change from Bangalore which did the trick here:

"

Wiese strikes with his first ball. Saha departs after playing a blinder. He goes for a 12-ball 31. One shot too many from him #IPL #KXIPvRCB

— Cricbuzz (@cricbuzz) May 13, 2015"

His team failed to fully capitalise, however. While it was imperative to play big shots in such a short game, there were too many risks taken too often from this Kings XI team, and as such, they found it extremely difficult to inject any kind of impetus into their play.

Other standout moments from their innings was a four-ball 14 from David Miller and 20 from 15 balls from Axar Patel. But aside from those minor cameos, George Bailey will have been a little disappointed his team only made 106 for six, especially after the platform provided by Saha.

In fairness, as noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, the Bangalore bowlers did well to keep things in check after a tough start:

"

That was a strong effort from #RCB; they kept their cool under the early onslaught & should chase these runs. #IPL #KXIPvRCB #KXIP

— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 13, 2015"

Any lingering concerns for Punjab fans were understandable, though, especially given the stellar batting lineup boasted by the Royal Challengers.

Virat Kohli attempted to give his side some impetus comparable to that provided by Saha. But just when he seemed to be cutting loose, the India star chopped on to his own stumps having made 19 from nine balls. When Chris Gayle fell for an arduous 17, it seemed as though Bangalore weren’t going to have things all their own way.

Even AB de Villiers—who struck a stunning unbeaten 133 in his last innings—couldn’t get going on what had quickly turned into a tough batting wicket. He was dismissed for just 10, and as noted by HoldingWilleyCricket, it just wasn’t his day:

"

OUT. Not AB's day. Tries to play mind-dance games, but just edges it in the end. Hendricks takes it, Axar claims it. #KXIPvRCB #IPL

— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) May 13, 2015"

After losing De Villiers, Kings XI were big favourites. The Bangalore batsmen continued to struggle in their timing of shots and the run rate spiralled to almost stratospheric levels; eventually, they fell well short in their chase, finishing up on 84 for six.

Bangalore now face a major fight to make it into the top four. This result leaves them in fifth, and this was a game in hand against the tournament whipping boys which many expected them to win easily. However, a reduced game shortens the gulf in quality between sides, and credit must go to Kings XI for the way they defended this total after such a tough tournament.
