Preakness 2015 Lineup: Full Race Guide for All Horses and Jockeys

Rory MarsdenMay 15, 2015

After a thrilling Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, all eyes now turn to Saturday's 2015 Preakness Stakes as American Pharoah looks to complete the second leg of the Triple Crown.

The top three finishers at Churchill Downs are all set to run again at Pimlico for the 140th running of the Preakness, as Firing Line and Dortmund join American Pharoah in the lineup.

The Triple Crown has not been won since Affirmed prevailed in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes in 1978. But the excitement and the anticipation will reach a fever pitch if jockey Victor Espinoza can ride to victory aboard Pharoah on Saturday.

Victor Espinoza Looking to Match Previous Triumphs

Espinoza knows how to win big races. His Kentucky Derby victory on May 2 was his second in as many years and the third of his career.

The 42-year-old has also won the Preakness twice, once in 2002 and once in 2014, both following victories at Churchill Downs.

Espinoza has twice been in touching distance of the Triple Crown, first aboard War Emblem and then last year with California Chrome.

He has every chance to get as close again, with American Pharoah the favourite for Saturday's Preakness.

Espinoza and American Pharoah have won all five races in which they have been paired together—Martin Garcia rode the Bob Baffert-trained colt as he was fifth on debut in August 2014.

Along with Espinoza, Baffert also has form at Pimlico, having trained the winner of the Preakness on five previous occasions.

All roads seemingly lead to victory for American Pharoah in Baltimore on Saturday, and Espinoza surely has the experience and the nous to handle the immense pressure.

Gary Stevens Looking to Cause an Upset

Gary Stevens came within a length of beating American Pharoah to the Kentucky Derby aboard Firing Line earlier this month.

The 52-year-old will try again with Firing Line in the Preakness, although history is stacked against him, per ESPN.com's Lane Gold:

A man with huge experience, Stevens has ridden in the Preakness 17 times, winning it on three occasions, most recently in 2013 aboard Oxbow.

He rode an immense race aboard the the Simon Callaghan-trained Firing Line in the Derby, as they edged Baffert's other horse, Dortmund, into third. But they could not beat American Pharoah. Here is the full race at Churchill Downs, per NBCSports.com:

Unsurprisingly, Stevens is looking to go one better on Saturday, per the Associated Press (via Fox Sports): "Hopefully we can turn the tables on American Pharaoh, the same as we did Dortmund. But believe me, I have plenty of respect for all three horses. They are very, very good and exceptional colts."

It would be an incredible achievement for a jockey who has consistently been plagued by knee injuries throughout his career.

He is certainly not to be written off, and aboard the impressive Firing Line, he could well spring an upset.
