How Twitter Reacted to Barcelona's Champions League Triumph over Bayern Munich

The last time Bayern Munich needed a comeback in the Champions League, they put six goals past Porto. However, Barcelona's visit to the Allianz Arena required the kind of comeback that looked utterly out of reach. The Blaugrana came into the semi-final's second leg with a 3-0 advantage and a run of nine consecutive Champions League victories, while the Germans were hampered by injury and suffering from a string of four successive defeats. Barca inevitably booked their place in the final at Berlin, but not without a fight from the Germans... 

Before kick-off, plenty of folks on Twitter pooh-poohed the romantic idea of a Bayern comeback...

But despite the improbability, a few fans were also hopeful that the Gods of Narrative would be looking down on Pep Guardiola...

The result was a particularly high-stakes affair for one fan...

Thankfully, a regrettable trip to the tattoo parlour was ultimately unnecessary. Meanwhile, Pep's decision to bench the player who scored the winner in the World Cup Final also prompted disbelief...

Five minutes before half-time, Marc-Andre ter Stegen's reputation was further enhanced when he clawed a Robert Lewandowski effort off the line...

It was a disappointing 45 minutes of football for the home side, but Thiago was trending at half-time due to an excellent outing against his former employers...

Opening goalscorer Benatia was also trending well into the second half, thanks to a rather meme-worthy piece of skill from Luis Suarez...

Just before the hour mark, Robert Lewandowski made it 2-2 on the evening with a neat finish...

In the 74th minute, Bayern took a 3-2 lead when Thomas Muller scored from a very similar position as Lewandowski's 15 minutes previously...

Alas, Bayern's late bravery was not enough to turn the tie in their favour, and it was Barcelona who progressed to the big game in Berlin...
