Why Paul Pogba Would Be a Dream Summer Transfer for Paris Saint-Germain

Andrew GibneyMay 12, 2015

Ever since Paul Pogba, who was born just 35 kilometres from the centre of Paris, played his way into the France national team, he has been seen as the perfect big-name signing at Paris Saint-Germain.

Financial fair play will make any summer move difficult for the Ligue 1 champions, but bringing the midfielder to the Parc des Princes would be the dream summer transfer for Laurent Blanc.

Only a handful of teams would be able to make a move for Pogba, but every club with the means has been linked. PSG may not offer the same weekly competition Manchester City and Chelsea can in England or the glitz and glamour of Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain, but per Simon Jones of the Daily Mail, they are one of the front-runners.

For the French club, it would be a monumental move both on and off the pitch. Creating a midfield trio of Marco Verratti, Blaise Matuidi and Pogba would give them one of the best combinations in world football.

Those three players offer contrasting qualities but would combine for the perfect blendone some clubs search for years to find.

Verratti is the tenacious ball-winner and the metronome who starts the PSG attack. He is adept at pushing the ball forward into space and can pick out teammates with passes both long and short.

To his left would be Matuidi, the engine and heart of the team. The France international bleeds rouges et bleu and will one day run himself into the ground.

Pogba would bring unpredictable edge to the mix, just like he does for France. He is capable of finding space, beating players and making things happen from nothing.

Last season, when Thiago Motta was enjoying something of an Indian summer, the trio worked well, but it was still missing that X-factor. Verratti can now do the job both he and Motta were tasked with. Bring Pogba in, and PSG's midfield would reach a whole new level.

In a recent interview with French magazine So Foot (h/t Football Italia), Verratti spoke about the joy of possibly combining with the Juve man:

"

He’s a phenomenon.

If he had been allowed to play at Manchester United he’d have responded as he’s doing now [for Juventus].

He needed confidence. Juventus gave it to him and now he’s proving to everyone that he’s among the best in the world.

It would be nice to play with him one day, he’s very good. With the best players everything is easier.

"

There has been talk in the Italian press regarding the possibility of Verratti being used as a makeweight in a possible Pogba deal, but rather than swap them around, PSG see a future with the Italian and French midfielders together.

"

@antoinefuret Yes to Lloris. Would be a great catch. Verratti & cash for Pogba a no no IMO. Marco will stay, PSG won't sell.

After the 3-1 win over Metz last week, captain Thiago Silva spoke, via Football Italia, in praise of Pogba’s ability.

"He's a young, talented player like Marco Verratti," Silva told reporters after the final whistle. "In addition, he's French, so he wouldn't have to be integrated or learn the language. If he were to arrive, we'd do everything to make him feel welcome from day one."

Pogba would not only be welcomed with open arms, but he would also instantly become the poster boy for the next stage of PSG's bid for global dominance.

The club should be built on a backbone of French success, but apart from Matuidi, the other homegrown players are nothing more than afterthoughts.

Pogba would be the player they use to show they are a French club and a force to be reckoned with. The 22-year-old is on the verge of becoming one of football’s best players, and PSG will likely never have another chance to sign him in his prime.

Whether it's this summer or next summer that the Lagny-sur-Marne native makes his move from Juventus, he would be PSG's dream signing.

PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi now has the unenviable job of trying to juggle the accounts to find a way to fund a Pogba move without selling key components of the squad.
