Sunrisers Hyderabad in Narrow Victory over Kings XI Punjab

3 of 3

Sunrisers Hyderabad (185/5) beat Kings XI Punjab (180-7) by five runs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad were thankful to David Warner's excellent knock of 81 as they saw off Kings XI by five runs on Monday.

Captain David Warner got his team off to a flying start as he punished some loose bowling from Anureet Singh to hit two fours and a six in the second over.

Kings XI probed for an early wicket, chopping and changing their bowlers with real urgency. Anureet, Sandeep Sharma, Gurkeerat Singh and Beuran Hendricks all featured in the first six overs, but Warner and Shikhar Dhawan raced to 56-0 as Kings XI struggled to impose themselves on their opponents.

Glenn Maxwell's introduction in the seventh over broke the partnership as the right-armer saw Dhawan (24) stumped on his first ball.

Dhawan's exit brought in Moises Henriques, fresh from his impressive 74-run haul over the Delhi Daredevils, but the Portuguese-born all-rounder could only manage 28 this time around as he unluckily fell to a catch by Anureet on the boundary.

Back-to-back sixes and a four got Eoin Morgan off to a promising start in the 15th over, but the England man could only reach 17 runs, caught by Manan Vohra after hitting a knee-high ball up in the air towards deep square leg.

Kings XI then hinted at a comeback as they took the magnificent Warner (81) and Naman Ojha (2) in two consecutive balls in the 18th, but Karn Sharma (11) and KL Rahul (17) took Sunrisers to a thoroughly respectable 185, particularly on a ground that averages 158.

Bhuvi Kumar got Sunrisers off to a wonderful start in the second innings with five dots in his first five balls, before Murali Vijay built some momentum with a quickfire 15 runs in the second over.

Vijay (24) and Vohra maintained a steady pace until the fourth over when, at 37-0, things began to fall apart for Kings XI.

Dhawan's spectacular dive to catch Vijay earned Sunrisers their first wicket, and what followed was a composed and clinical bowling performance from the in-form side as Kings XI struggled to form any sort of batting momentum.

Vohra (20), Maxwell (11) and Wriddhiman Saha (5) soon followed Vijay, and at the close of the ninth over, Kings XI had lost 4-23 as Bipul Sharma and Henriques took full advantage of the dreadful display.

George Bailey and Gurkeerat were dismissed for measly totals of six and three respectively, with Kings XI's sole ray of hope coming from David Miller, whose unbeaten knock of 89 was the only standout batting performance in the second innings.

Miller defied Sunrisers' bowlers right to the end and, with 28 needed off the final over, gave Sunrisers a scare as he hit 22.

Kings XI will take great heart from this performance, but the rest of the team will need to match Miller's determination if they are to have a chance against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday.
