Preakness Odds 2015: Early Look at Vegas' Lines for Each Horse in Field
American Pharoah proved to be a splendid colt in his 2015 Kentucky Derby win May 2, and it should come as no surprise that the horse with the misspelled moniker is the favorite heading into the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.
The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans is set for May 16 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Derby runner-up Firing Line is in the field, as is third-place Dortmund, who shares a trainer with American Pharoah in Bob Baffert.
AP, Dortmund and Firing Line turned the Kentucky Derby into a three-horse race in early May, but with much of the same stable of talent from the Derby lined up for the Preakness, this run at Pimlico has every chance to be competitive and maybe even harbor a surprise winner.
Here's an early look at the horses and the odds for the 140th edition of the Preakness Stakes.
| American Pharoah | 5-6 |
| Firing Line | 5-1 |
| Dortmund | 11-2 |
| Carpe Diem | 12-1 |
| Competitive Edge | 14-1 |
| Materiality | 16-1 |
| Danzig Moon | 20-1 |
| Divining Rod | 22-1 |
| Bodhisattva | 40-1 |
| Stanford | 40-1 |
| Grand Bili | 50-1 |
| Tale of Verve | 66-1 |

Potential New Shooters
One of the latest additions to the Preakness field is Bodhisattva, who is not expected to make much noise with long 40-1 odds.
Bodhisattva is a new shooter, having not run in the Kentucky Derby. The thoroughbred has three wins in 11 career starts, with the last victory—and last race—coming in the Federico Tesio Stakes on April 18 at Pimlico.
Trainer Jose Corrales insists he's not entering Bodhisattva just to get his horse some exercise, per Jonathan Lintner of the Courier-Journal: "I will not run a horse just to run the horse. If I don't feel a horse can run in the first three, why run? That's the way I think."
Lintner also writes that Grand Bili is another new shooter for the Preakness. Grand Bili has just two starts to his credit, making him one of the least experienced colts in the field.
After a fine bit of training, Tale of Verve will race in the Preakness, per BloodHorse.com: "With exercise rider Pedro Velez aboard and working with the Fipke-owned Lemon Drop Title, Tale of Verve produced fractions of :12 3/5 seconds, :24 3/5 seconds, and :36 3/5 seconds, then galloped out six furlongs in 1:14 3/5."
Trainer Dallas Stewart tweeted out a picture of Tale of Verve in the buildup to Pimlico:

Blood-Horse.com also notes that Mr. Z, who finished 13th in the Derby, will not be participating in the Preakness Stakes.
Stanford was a late scratch in Kentucky but will now have a chance to show his worth at Pimlico.
Competitive Edge and Divining Rod round out the new shooters in the unofficial field. Divining Rod has been training in Maryland, per Lintner, and trainer Arnaud Delacour has been happy with the horse's easy training runs: "He just stretched his legs out there, and that's kind of what we wanted. He had a good breeze last week. Everything has been going well with him. He's happy and came back in good shape."
Competitive Edge may not have run in the Kentucky Derby, but he won't be galloping on any more rest than the other horses carrying over from the first jewel in the Triple Crown. Competitive Edge won the Pat Day Mile Stakes (formerly known as the Kentucky Derby Trial) at Churchill Downs on May 2, his fourth win in four starts.
Winning that race makes Competitive Edge perhaps the horse to watch of the new shooters, although all will find it difficult to compete with the staying power of American Pharoah. The Preakness is just 1/16 of a mile shorter than the Derby, so AP and jockey Victor Espinoza's main challenge here will be breaking at the right time.
The duo needed much of the final stretch to overcome Firing Line in Kentucky. Of course, that burst came after the horse started in the No. 18 post. If the Preakness field is indeed smaller and/or American Pharoah gets a better starting position, it could be a one-horse race May 16.
