Chennai Go Top After Comfortable Victory over Rajasthan
3 of 4
Chennai Super Kings (157/5) beat Rajasthan Royals (145/9) by 12 runs
Chennai Super Kings got off to a very tough start in this vital game against Rajasthan Royals after winning the toss and deciding to bat.
Their star-studded batting line-up typically gives this team a wonderful platform upon which to flourish, but with Dwayne Smith (6) and Suresh Raina (3) both out inside four overs, the situation was looking bleak for the hosts at 15 for two.
But a mature innings from Brendon McCullum helped Chennai get back on track in this one. The New Zealander is synonymous with his brute displays of batting power, but with two wickets down, he had to curtail his natural attacking instincts and play safe.
He eventually departed for 82 from 62 ball after some late acceleration and as noted by Aakash Chopra, it was a very classy knock from the Black Caps captain:
"Really liked the way McCullum paced his innings today...read the pitch and the situation well. But hello...Negi ahead of Dhoni? Well well...
— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) May 10, 2015"
McCullum was assisted by Faf du Plessis, who allowed the opener to hog most of the strike in a solid 101-run partnership. The South African was out for a diligent 29 and although Pawan Negi was dismissed for just two, some late flourishes from MS Dhoni (13 off seven) and Dwayne Bravo (15 off eight) helped Chennai to 157 for five from their 20 overs.
Although it was a below par score, as noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, the Super Kings would have been confident defending it:
"Statistically #CSK are the second best team defending totals of 150-160 - winning 38% of the time. #IPL #CSKvRR #RR
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 10, 2015"
What ensued was a frustrating chase for Rajasthan, as none of their quality batsmen were able to capitalise on encouraging starts. First Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for 28 after looking well set and sandwiching the soft dismissal of Steve Smith for just four was the wicket of Shane Watson, who took up 30 balls to score 28.
However, as we can see here courtesy of the tournament’s official Twitter feed, Watson was undone by a piece of brilliance in the field by Bravo:
"Don't miss - The Bravo brilliance on the boundary ropes @ChennaiIPL #IPL https://t.co/3tqRNwnjPc
— IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) May 10, 2015"
Perhaps there is something instinctively flawed about this team when the pressure bites though, because they continued to lose wickets regularly in this chase. Neither Deepak Hooda (15) or Karun Nair (10) were able to make much of an impact and suddenly, Chennai sensed blood.
Sanju Samson threatened to counter-attack with 26 from 17 balls, but when he was dismissed, the rate had escalated and the Royals were running out of quality batting options. Eventually they came up 12 runs short on 145 for nine.
While Rajasthan toiled in the heat of the chase, credit must go to the superb bowling from Chennai too. As noted by Wilde, Ravindra Jadeja had a stunning game with the ball:
"Ravindra Jadeja: • 1 • W • 1 1 1 • 1 1 W 1 • • 1 W • W 1 • 1 • 1 4-0-11-4 #IPL #CSKvRR #CSK #RR
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 10, 2015"
Chennai showcased a different side to their usual make-up here, epitomised by the composure of McCullum. They boast an adaptable set of skills in this group, proving this format is not all about big-hitting and fast bowling; as they gear up for a battle for their playoff spot, it was the kind of display Rajasthan could learn plenty from.
Sensational AB de Villiers Helps Bangalore Crush Mumbai
4 of 4
Bangalore Royal Challengers (235/1) beat Mumbai Indians (196/7) by 39 runs
A remarkable innings from AB de Villiers was the catalyst for an incredible batting effort for Bangalore Royal Challengers against Mumbai Indians.
After his own superb century last time out, Mumbai will have been delighted to have gotten rid of Chris Gayle for just 13 early on. But his dismissal brought De Villiers out to bat, and alongside Virat Kohli, the South African sensation destroyed the Indians’ bowling attack with his bespoke brand of batting.
As noted by ESPNcricinfo, his unbeaten innings of 133 was the third-highest score in IPL history:
"AB de Villiers wallops third highest score in IPL history Records page: http://t.co/CkbTjFkEqX #IPL2015 pic.twitter.com/RaPxGXyGRr
— ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) May 10, 2015"
De Villiers has been promoted to third in the batting line-up in recent weeks. While we’ve seen some brief cameos of his quality, this was the first time he’s been able to build a substantial innings like this. With Kohli playing a little more reserved alongside him, the South African had license to operate with aggression and freedom.
The results were pretty spectacular, as he hammered 19 fours and four sixes during his time at the crease. In total, alongside Kohli—who was understatedly excellent himself with 82 from just 50 balls—Bangalore put on a whopping 215 runs for the second wicket.
The India international, as noted here by PUMA Cricket, was a perfect foil for De Villiers’ enormous hitting:
"Kohli has been the perfect wingman for AB De Villiers.Solid 50 from him as his partner moves into the 90s.#PUMATimeOut #MIvsRCB
— PUMA Cricket (@pumacricket) May 10, 2015"
It was a sensational show of ball-striking, but as magnificent as the South African was, the bowling from Mumbai was rank, serving up full toss after full toss. But credit must go to both De Villiers and Kohli, who put massive pressure on the bowlers with their multifaceted batting skills.
Their superb batting pushed Bangalore to a whopping 235 for one from their 20 overs, meaning Mumbai would have to produce an unprecedented chase if they were going to win this one. But after losing Parthiv Patel (19) and Rohit Sharma (15) early on, what was a massive challenge quickly looked impossible.
As seen here courtesy of Sky Sports Cricket, some poor running from Mumbai added to their downfall:
"First wicket falls for #MI chasing 236. They're 29-1 after four overs. Watch on SS2 or follow http://t.co/YcpUHqaf9B pic.twitter.com/DHqNunXvc2
— Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) May 10, 2015"
Credit must go to the West Indies pairing of Lendl Simmons, who played well for his unbeaten 68, and Kieron Pollard, who had fun with 49 runs from 24 balls. But even so, the rate was soaring. The game drifted to its inevitable conclusion, with Mumbai eventually losing by 39 runs.
Bangalore seem to be peaking at the perfect time in this tournament. With the playoffs looming, this win pushes them to fourth position with games in hand and, encouragingly, their array of star batsmen—most notably Gayle, De Villiers and Kohli—all seem to be finding their very best form with some crunch clashes to come.
That’s been evident in their previous two games, as noted here by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo:
"#RCB last two innings: v #KXIP: 226/3 v #MI: 235/1 Total: 461-4 (40 overs) #IPL #MIvRCB
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 10, 2015"
Mumbai now face a massive uphill challenge if they’re going to make it into the playoffs. This match was a microcosm of their entire campaign: impressive with the bat but not good enough with the ball.
But this time, in fairness, they were undone by an innings of undiluted genius from De Villiers.
