Awesome AB de Villiers
By his own impeccable standards, Royal Challengers Bangalore star AB de Villiers has been a little disappointing in the IPL this year. But the South African sensation produced his best innings of the tournament so far on Sunday with a simply stunning unbeaten 133 from 59 balls.
It was another inning which saw De Villiers play superbly all around the wicket. As noted here by Broken Cricket, there are few chinks in AB’s armour:
"AB Strong ZONE!! Said this Many times and He Proves again #MIvsRCB pic.twitter.com/XbPSUZOUrm

Bangalore have promoted De Villiers to third in the batting order recently, and it’s a shift which has yielded mixed success so far. But this was a timely indicator of the kind of damage he can do when he gets a bit more time at the crease.
Alongside Virat Kohli—the two made a magnificent 215-run partnership—AB cut loose, as Bangalore surged to a final mammoth total of 235 for one. De Villiers went to his century with an enormous six from just 47 balls. As noted by by ESPNcricinfo, he made it all look so easy:
"AB de Villiers making a Twenty20 century seem oh-so-easy. Doesn't even seem like he is batting at top gear http://t.co/YB4cFzLNk1 #IPL2015
— ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) May 10, 2015"
After winning here, De Villiers’ side are in a brilliant position to cement their status in the playoffs of this competition. From a neutral standpoint, the longer this unique player stays in this tournament, the better.
Mature Innings from Brendon McCullum
So often we’re used to seeing Brendon McCullum come out swinging from the hip for the Chennai Super Kings, but after the early losses of Dwayne Smith and Suresh Raina in their match against Rajasthan Royals, the New Zealander knew he had to go about his business with a bit more maturity.
He paced his innings brilliantly, scoring at about a run-a-ball for his half-century before upping the ante with the finishing post in sight. Eventually he was dismissed for 81 from 61 deliveries, a knock which included seven fours and fours sixes.
As noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, it was a tremendous innings:
"That was a fantastic innings from Brendon McCullum. He knows how to bat on this pitch. #IPL #CSKvRR #CSK #RR
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 10, 2015"
It was a side of McCullum’s make-up which we may have to see a little more of as we approach the business end of this competition. Both he and Smith love to play with aggression at the top of the order, but if there’s an early wicket, sometimes a bit of time to regroup can be a platform for some brisker scoring later in the innings.
McCullum enabled his team to do exactly that here, and while we all enjoy his knocks of brute power, for a player of his experience, this kind of composure is something many would be keen to see a lot more of.
