Calling True or False on 5 Recent Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Rumours
One match remains of Tottenham Hotspur's 2014-15 Premier League season. Then, give or take the accompanying demands of their subsequent short post-season tour of Malaysia and Australia, head coach Mauricio Pochettino and the relevant decision-makers can get to work on transfer preparations for the Argentinian's second year in charge.
Over the following pages we look at five recent linkages with, and rumours relating to Tottenham and judge whether they are more likely to be true or false.
First up, the player who on Saturday was voted by Spurs supporters as their player of the year.
Harry Kane
1 of 4
The Daily Mail's Matt Lawton and Mike Keegan reported on Thursday night that Tottenham striker Harry Kane is "at the top of Manchester United’s list of transfer targets this summer." Within a day the word was out that Spurs would not be considering letting their top scorer go, a rebuttal carried in The Guardian, per the Press Association, among others publications
Kane only just agreed a new contract in February (the second he signed this season), extending his stay in north London until 2020.
With barely 18 months of top-flight experience the 21-year-old will understand he is better served continuing to hone his game in a familiar environment. At least for the time being.
Having worked hard to become a key member of Pochettino's team, the academy product will likely be keen to see where the head coach can take the club too.
Tottenham's experience with former players like Gareth Bale and Luka Modric shows lengthy contracts do not mean a player is guaranteed to stay. But even in the event of Kane's head being slightly turned by interest from United, with his deal nowhere near expiring Spurs are not required to sell to a club they regard as a top-four rival so as to avoid losing a prize asset cheaply.
Verdict: False.
Toby Alderweireld and Morgan Schneiderlin
2 of 4
Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has frequently been linked with joining his former boss Pochettino at Tottenham since the latter arrived there last summer.
Despite the transfer not occurring then, The Telegraph's Matt Law believes Arsenal turning their attention elsewhere could aid Spurs' chances of signing the France international this summer.
Saints will not be keen to let Schneiderlin go after a season in which he has reiterated his importance to their cause. Should persistence of their ex-manager unsettle the player, though, current manager Ronald Koeman could be tempted to sell for as sizable a feet as they can get. It will certainly be more than after next season when he will only have one year left on his contract.
Another Southampton player linked with Spurs recently is defender Toby Alderweireld, per The Mirror's John Cross. The report from earlier this month stated the north Londoners could jump to the front of the line for the versatile defender if his parent club Atletico Madrid exercise options to sell him to a club other than Southampton.
Alderweireld has since indicated to BBC Radio Solent, via BBC Sport, that "Southampton are in a good position because I know the club," though. Indeed, if Saints are given the chance to make the deal permanent, it seems likely they would capitalise on the good relationship established between the club and player this season.
Verdict: True for Schneiderlin. False for Alderweireld.
Kevin Wimmer
3 of 4
Talked about in this writer's previous look at Tottenham transfer rumours doing the rounds, Cologne defender Kevin Wimmers' name is still appearing. The no-smoke-without-fire assessment of this prospective deal looks like being backed up.
The latest to link Spurs with the Austrian are the Daily Star's Paul Hetherington and the Sunday People's Steve Bates.
Though in disagreement about the exact date the deal will be completed, both are certain Wimmer's arrival at White Hart Lane is inevitable. The People report says "paperwork on the deal was completed last week."
Verdict: True.
Hugo Lloris
4 of 4
His signing of a new contract ensured Hugo Lloris leaving Tottenham was not up for discussion last summer. The signs are speculation about his future will not be avoided this summer.
Touted in recent weeks as a replacement for David de Gea should he leave Manchester United, Lloris has now also been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
The Daily Express' Anthony Chapman cites a story carried on Italian website Tuttomercatoweb that the Spanish giants are more interested in signing Spurs' goalkeeper than Man United's No. 1.
Spurs would almost certainly prefer Lloris to leave the Premier League if he was to depart. Then again, the club's hierarchy might baulk at Real taking another one of their best players after previously signing Bale and Modric.
The Telegraph's Matt Law believes Spurs will resist any bid for Lloris. Anything more happening with one is going to depend on moves happening elsewhere.
Verdict: False (for now).
