Kansas City Chiefs: And Just When You Thought Things Couldn't Get Worse...

Ron TepperAug 31, 2009

Ok, so the Chiefs lost their Franchise Quarterback for four weeks? No harm done; after all, we still have Tyler Thigpen. I'm sure Chan Gailey will work his magic with Tyler again this year. But then again...Chan, where art thou?

How about the unemployment line.

In the next few weeks, he won't be the only one.

Chan Gailey was fired today as Kansas City's Offensive Coordinator. This move doesn't shock me or even surprise me (you may want to read my archive article written a few months ago). It does however, bother me.

No, Chief fans, don't insult your intelligence and wait for the "Official Statement" to come out of Kansas City explaining this move. We all know why this happened. In fact, we can all see what's coming next.

In with the old and out with the new.

Yes, our Chiefs will be a revolving door of comings and goings in these next few weeks. Yes, it's true for all teams, but with this team, we are talking extremes

For those who still think the Chiefs are building a foundation think twice. The wrecking ball hasn't even begun to swing.

I found it shocking when Todd Haley stated a week ago that 50 percent of the Chiefs current team roster will be different by opening day.

All teams have roster cuts coming up, but they will be subtracting not adding. They don't have to pick up guys that other teams cast aside

Somehow, I find it hard to believe that good Football teams are built with guys that other teams want to get rid of. Sometimes you get lucky. Most of the times you don't.

The Chiefs may be the new poster boys for perfecting this system and making it into an art form. On the other hand, they may be in the process of not only sinking this team but embarrassing Chief fans beyond recognition.

There is a saying: "A rolling stone gathers no moss." In other words, its awfully hard to "build" something when the foundation is forever changing.

You can't build a team at the same time you are tearing it down.

I have no problems replacing bad players with better players but if these "better" players are among another team's worst well.............

Yes, this is a team that is just in the beginning stages of being built. That certainly IS NOT what Kansas City fans, who haven't seen a Super Bowl in 40 years, want to hear.

So why dump Chan now? Did it take this long for Haley to realize that their conflicting philosophies can't coexist.

Don't blame Gailey for the Chiefs Offensive woes this preseason. That's an excuse. Was it Gailey's fault that the Chiefs have poor quality receivers? Or a lousy Offensive Line? And don't even bring up the insipid topic of "play calling".

Did you notice how bad Tyler Thigpen looked this weekend? Horrible. How did he look last year with Chan Gailey running the show? About as good as the Third Round draft pick they are trying to get for him. I followed Gailey for years, especially here with the Steelers. He excelled at putting guys into situations where they can be their best. With Thigpen possibly in the spotlight again why fire Gailey at a time when they may need him the most?

No this is about ego. We have been asking ourselves for months can these two guys coexist and now, two weeks before the season begins, we FINALLY have our answer.

Of course there is even a bigger issue that exists here. Todd Haley is a ROOKIE head coach. Now not only is he head coach but he is also Offensive Coordinator AND the new Quarterback coach. Believe me, he will be far removed from this defense.

Expect a lot of changes from this point on. Some of their cuts will be surprises and one of them may be Glenn Dorsey (or at least traded for picks).

What I saw Saturday was what I feared four months ago. I saw a group of players playing alien positions and struggling. Chief commentators pointed out that the Defensive Line still doesn't understand their role in the 3/4. You block blockers so Linebackers don't have to fight off blocks to make the tackle. They didn't

Even Ron Edwards, who Rich Baldinger was impressed with, on the nose often stood up against the double team and played "Patty Cake." Tank Tyler was the victim of screams from the sidelines. Glenn Dorsey was planted on his ass. Only Tyson Jackson looked like he belonged

Was this really the players fault or is it the system that is being forced down their throat. You can't fit round pegs in square holes and then point fingers at the players. We could all see this coming from a mile away.

On the positive side, Tamba Hali looked great. He is so thin its hard to believe he was a Defensive Lineman. Turk McBride looked good as well. Larry Johnson looks like the RB of two years ago and Jamal Charles had a great game. Albert and Watters played well on the Line.

On the negative side where were the Receivers? Do the Chiefs have ANY Tight Ends who can catch a football? Will they ever have a return game? Is the pass rush that much better? What now at Quarterback? Will the Right Tackle position ever be addressed? FANS THE CLOCK IS TICKING.

No problem I guess.
