IPL 2015: Leading Run-Scorers, Top Wicket-Takers, Averages and More T20 Stats
Royal Challengers Bangalore nearly set a new Indian Premier League record for the biggest winning margin in their 138-run demolition of Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday, a brilliant display of both batting and bowling from the hosts.
Chris Gayle led all batsmen with 117 runs from just 57 deliveries, while Mitchell Starc was his usual dominant self, taking four wickets and surrendering just 15 runs through four overs. Sreenath Aravind also grabbed four wickets.
The result sees Bangalore rise to third in the IPL standings, with the all-important match against Mumbai Indians right around the corner. Indians currently sit fifth, just one point behind Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders, and with the play-offs fast approaching, no team can afford to drop a result at this stage of the competition.

Chris Gayle Goes Hunting For Sixes
Royal Challengers Bangalore got a massive push from star batsman Chris Gayle on Wednesday, as the West Indies standout managed to score 117 runs from just 57 deliveries. Gayle was aggressive early, seeking boundaries, and he ended up with seven fours and an incredible 12 sixes.
To say Kings XI Punjab's bowlers had difficulty containing the veteran would be an understatement. Every ball he hit seemed destined for the boundary. George Bailey, Punjab's captain, had difficulty understanding why the prolific batsman was dropped for a stretch in April, per ESPNcricinfo's Freddie Wilde:
“What was going through your mind when Gayle was batting?” George Bailey: “Why did you drop him? You idiot.” #IPL #RCBvKXIP #RCB #KXIP
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 6, 2015
Wilde himself was beyond impressed:
Staggering innings from Chris Gayle. You can't coach that power. Brute strength. #IPL #RCBvKXIP #RCB #KXIP
— Freddie Wilde (@fwildecricket) May 6, 2015
Gayle may not be the most consistent batsman on the planet, but when he's on form, there's simply no containing his raw power. Paired with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, the Windies' star gives Bangalore one of the most lethal top orders in all of Twenty20 cricket.
Mitchell Starc's Sublime Innings
Not to be outdone by Gayle, Mitchell Starc produced the second-best bowling figures of the entire 2015 IPL season so far, grabbing four wickets while surrendering just 15 runs. The Australian was fantastic during the ODI World Cup and has carried his fine form straight into the IPL campaign, giving Bangalore the kind of star quality needed to shackle opposition batsmen
By the end of the match, Punjab's batsmen were swinging desperately at wide deliveries, a clear sign Starc's excellent bowling was starting to get to them. Coupled with Sreenath Aravind's surprisingly strong innings, they nearly managed to hand Kings XI the biggest loss in IPL history.
The 138-run win was just two runs below the winning margin of Kolkata Knight Riders' 2008 victory over Bangalore, per the Times of India, and it sent a clear message to the rest of the IPL: Bangalore are only getting better and will be a force to be reckoned with once the play-offs get started.
